Airlift 1000 + Spring recall vs OME 906

Hello,
I am planning on towing quite a bit more in the future and want to improve my rear suspension. The truck sags as soon as anything is in the rear and sits on the bumpstops with the weight of my trailer. about 4500lbs boat+trailer. I was originally going to do the OME906 springs but have been reading up on airlifts. I was thinking I could have the recalled springs replaced on my 96, then add airlift. It is about half the price and is adjustable. I am not looking to do heavy offroading. I dont mind a mild lift though. Which is the better solution for me? Is it still possible to have the springs replaced for free at Toyota like is said in the about rear sag thread?

Hi James, I have a 97 and I went to the dealer to ask if the springs in my 4runner have been recalled and they said nope. So idk about a recall. But I do have the one 906 coils in my runner and they give a much sportier feel, I love them. If you plan on towing they are a better choice than the originals. An airlift will help in towing but probably won't make the ride any sportier.

They shouldnt sag to the bump stops, get the springs replaced, i would also make sure your shocks are still good, then install the airbags. Although having air bags wont be very good for off roading because of the flex even if you put the psi at minimum of 10psi which your supposed to do, but all depends how hard youll be off roading. I bought a pair of firestone air bags for my 2010 to help tow my 3rd gen that i use only for off roading.
If you do a lift with new shocks, get the heavy duty shocks for added weight, OME has that option, itll sag a bit but shouldnt bottom out. Use this option if your gonna off road with your runner also

I just purchased the air lift 1000 kit for my 99 limited. I am towing a two horse trailer and it comes in around 6500 with the horses. It sags it down pretty good. Gonna get these installed in the next week or two and it should do the trick. Got the compressor as well.

i contacted toyota and they said "THE RECALL THAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT WAS PERFORMED 9/11/07. IT IS NO LONGER ELIGIBLE FOR A RECALL" Not sure if that means it was completed or I missed the window of oportunity. I am leaning towards the airlift for now, just so I dont have to worry about the possiblilty of a rough ride or too much rake. 90% of my driving will be just me commuting to work and back.

Air lift bags

Just added them to my 266k mileage 98 4runner.
Installed without removing the springs. Cut down the bump stops inside the
springs. Been towing 730 miles every other week. SHOULD help!!! Will be towing again this weekend from florida to atlanta. Ill respond with results.

FYI, I purchased my 97 4runner last year and the springs were never replaced so I had it done. They had to order the springs, but they did replace them. So I know they still do it, but your situation sounds like they were already replaced back in 07.

I installed the airlift 1000 and really like it. It levels the truck out nicely with 450lbs of tongue weight. I usually leave the bags at 5-10psi for normal driving and it lifts the rear up for a slight rake and a firmer ride. I highly recommend this mod for anyone who tows!

I have the Airlift 1000 in the rear, and it comes in handy when towing a small boat. Previously the rear would sag down a lot when the boat (or any load) was hooked up. For every day driving it can make the rear a bit stiff, but it did level it out nicely.
