Actually I'm mistaken, I thought the v6 diff was used in all models after 86 but my 87 has a 4 cyl diff. I will swap it for a v6 diff.
The v6 diff has a larger casing, larger bearings and a 4 pinion carrier. The ring gears are the same.

Stock '87 4runner SR5 in all it's baller red interior holyness. Rebuilt 22re, new radiator, rebuilt 5 spd., rebuilt transfer case, rebuilt rear diff. The rusted passenger front fender will be replaced, everything else is solid aside from a little rust in the bottom edges of the rear quarter panels. A much more solid platform for my needs.

I had some fun with the hoerunner this weekend. I drove it the hour trip to Uwharrie to test its road-worthyness for a trip to Virginia at the end of the month. It did pretty well. Friday night I met up with one of my favorite wheeling buddies in his '09 Tacoma TRD Offroad. This thing is setup well, the next step for him is 35's. Saturday morning we met a few other Toyotas and got a little dirty.

We got my 4runner turned around, tied a snatch block to a tree behind the Tacoma and started winching him back onto the trail. The snatch block broke, so with no other options I pulled the synthetic cable through a shackle with the protective cable sleeve over the shackle and finished winching him back onto the trail. Then I cabled to the front of the Tacoma and pulled him over the berm, then had to turn back around so we could finish the trail. Good times!

Nicely done. I thought for the longest time that'd I'd never bother with a winch, but I think I'm changing my mind.

i hear ya, i've never really wanted one in the past but there's been 1 or 2 times in the last couple years where i coulda really used it, so now i'm thinking my front bumper will have to have one.
ajohnson: nice wheelin pics man, and also nice find on the runner, looks clean! i'm sorta at the same point...i've been seriously thinking about starting over but i really don't want to be down for a year. got my eye on a pretty clean 1st gen, i may throw the link up on my build page

Haha! It was a lot of fun. A lot slicker than our trip.
I'm headed to Potts Mountain, VA at 6 am. I am really excited to wheel with some badass Tacomas this weekend. I'll try to get lots of pics.

Damn it! And the Honey Badger is temporarily out of commission! Wish you'd had mentioned Potts Mountain sooner. It's just down the road from Flag Pole/Meadow Knob VA. I could have met up with you guys!

Oh damn, I had no idea. This will be my first VA wheeling trip. Hopefully I won't have any issues. It's going to be a long ride in a tin can on 37's lol.

Sounds like it's time to save up for a trailer. I don't envy your drive up to the mountain.

Just got back home. I had a blast. It rained almost the whole ride up (about 3.5 hours), throttled pegged in 4th gear @ 55mph to make it up the VA/NC I-77 mountain :bravo:. The trail conditions were very messy and it was very foggy. It was like wheeling in a rain forest. I made it through all of the obstacles, but it was a bit challenging which I really enjoyed. We camped in a meadow on top of the mountain half-way through the trail, pretty much in a cloud. I got some cool pics that I'll post later. I'm going to relax for a little bit.

This winter or spring is the plan. I'm driving it to the beach in September. Going to wheel the red one through september and October while I save up some moneyz.
