alarm sensitivity

is anyone else having a problem with their stock alarm system in a 03 4 runner being too sensitive? everything seems to be triggering it from the vibrations of the modified exhausts to the trash truck. is there anyway to adjust the sensitivity? i know on after market parts there are, but when i called toyota they told me there was no gauge to adjust the problem. i really don't want to disable the damn thing.

If you have the VIP system from Toyota, you are in luck. I was hooking up my NAV unit to the reverse speed sensor, and I had to remove my glovebox. I just happened to notice, just to the right of the air filter mechanism, a small box with a small dial on it (the dial adjusts with a small screwdriver). It looked to me like the sensitivity adjustment box for the alarm...It is super easy to remove the glove box...you don't even need tools. I would send a pic, but I have no reason to remove my glovebox again in the near future...Good luck...

IIRC, the adustment located behind the glove box controls engine high idle speed when the A/C compressor is running...

The VIP RS3200 alarm does have an adjustment to the right of the glove box / behind the passenger kick panel. That adjustment is for the glass breakage sensor only. In my experience, that sensor is not overly sensitive even in the maximum setting.

The other sensors detect a door open or an attempt to start the car and thus don't require a sensitivity adjustment. It's possible that one of these is faulty and thus causing your alarm to think a door is opening when it really isn't.

If you have factory alarm (non VIP), then there is no glass breakage sensor and no sensitivity adjusments. The factory alarm has an extra sensor to detect an open hood and also an extra horn.
