All Canadian 4runner's have Full-Time 4WD

I posted this in another thread but it may not be read by a lot of you. The Canadian press release today has stated that all 4runner models would receive the full-time 4WD system which is available in the States only in the Limited trim. Here's the webpage:

I posted this in the other thread too. Here's the exact language taken out of each press release:

CAN: All packages are equipped with full-time, four-wheel-drive with a locking centre differential and employs a three-mode, centre console-mounted switch.

U.S. : SR5 and Trail 4x4 models have a two-speed lever-operated, part-time system with neutral position, while the 4Runner Limited is equipped with full-time, four-wheel-drive with a locking center differential and employs a three-mode, center console-mounted switch.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention---and giving me hope that this is available for the U.S. market sometime soon.

We've got the 4WD system you want here in the U.S., and you've got what I want in Canada.

Okay, just throwing this out there since I don't really know the answer---- Can U.S. buyers go over the border into Canada, buy a Canadian 4Runner, and bring it back to the U.S.? There has to be some sort of restriction, right?

Not that I know of. I know for us to get one from the US, we just have to ensure the car is admissible into Canada and then do the paperwork. The problem for us is the dealership not wanting to sell to us and also Toyota USA not willing to provide the letter indicating all recalls are done on the car. You also have to own the car for at least 3 business days in the US before bringing it across the border just cause that's how long it takes to process the paperwork once it's faxed to Canada customs. Oh yeah, and lots of dealerships here say they won't honor the warranty. They basically say, if you don't want to buy it from Canada, and get it in the US, then go back to the US if you need any help. I know cause the US has vehicles or trims that I like which aren't available here and I have inquired. I want a manual SUV so I asked about the Hyundai Santa Fe just out of curiosity and found out that in Canada, you can only get manual in the FWD models, whereas in the US, you can get manual in the FWD and AWD. Sucks that we get less options. However much I like how the new 4Runner looks, I don't see myself ever getting it though. My negativity towards automatics is too strong and that is basically the only thing holding me back from the new 4Runner. I have a Rav4 right now (wife's choice) and I absolutely hate driving it. I just can't stand an automatic and when it comes time to get another vehicle, I'll be looking at a 3rd gen 4Runner or a new Taco (hopefully they'll still have manual by the time that happens).

It depends on the vehicle. Some of them do state that they meet California's stringent levels, but it's on a vehicle by vehicle basis.

this has been disproven. 4WD setups for the canadian 4runners mirror their U.S. counterparts; only the Limited has full-time 4WD.

Sandcrawler is correct: SR5 and Trail models have a part time system - only the Limited has full-time. The misunderstanding comes from the initial Toyota Canada press release that did, indeed, state that all models had full time AWD.

As for importing from Canada to the U.S., it is possible but not fiscally advantageous. The base 4Runner starts at $36,800 here (about $35,000 US) and the packages are very different between the two countries, for example you can't get a third row of seats in an SR5, and have to step up to the Ltd at $47,775 to get them.

A few of the trim bits are different, too, you guys get a bit more chrome. Guess Toyota figures Canadians don't want the bling.

I suspect as soon as Transport Canada (which regulates bringing cars into Canada) updates the list of admissible vehicles to include the 104R, you'll see US models leaving for the great white north.

What sucks here too is that if you get a Limited, you have to have 3rd row seating. However, we do get the running boards

Unfortunately the third row can't be taken out, and it does fold flat, mind you when they're up there's no trunk space.

Well here is the right info for Canadian 2010 4Runner model Trial and SR5.
Transfer Cases

Versatile transfer case shifting helps make the 4Runner strong.

There are two transfer case designs available on the 4Runner. Trail and SR5 models have a manual transfer case shifter, while the Limited has an electronic transfer case shifter.

The manual transfer case offers three drive modes:

2-wheel drive high-range
4-wheel drive high-range
4-wheel drive low-range
You can shift the transfer case from 2-wheel drive high to 4-wheel drive high while in motion. To shift from 4-wheel drive high to 4-wheel drive low, you must come to a complete stop. Shift the transmission into neutral, then move the transfer case lever to the 4-wheel drive low position.

Note that, when in 4-wheel drive high or low mode, a 4-wheel drive icon will be illuminated on the instrument panel.
