I've got a 9857. I dont know the differences. I also dont have an IPOD, but from what I've read for mine, using one would be really easy. I love it for MP3 playback. It such a good deck. You can control the subwoofer separately, the sound is really clean, the scrolling through folders on MP3 discs is really simple, and it even tells me happy birthday!!!
I just tried plugging my Ipod into an Alpine tv screen model with the Ipod connector and it works slick as hell. All the options for songs are on the screen and you never have to touch the ipod except to plug it in. I think the 9856 has that feature.
im not sure if all alpine models let u change the text when u first turn on your car but if so... how do u change the text? or how do u put in text.... does it say in the manual how to?

Mine doesn't and it's a 9857. It's loaded to the tits, but that feature isn't available. It will tell me things like Happy New Year or Happy 4th of July (even though we dont celebrate that , but I can't customize much else. If yours does that, it would say it in the manual.
I have a 9857. Supposedly, there were a few bugs in the 9856 HU. I don't know what they were, but they were supposed to have all been worked out in the 9857 unit. Mine came with a free iPod cable and it works great!
