Zip ties is a great idea. Just cut it to remove.
Not sure if zip ties can hold the weight though unless you put alot of them.

Oh yeah, those zip ties will hold that roof rack on nice and tight (insert sarcastic eye roll emoji here).

I actually cant think of a worse way to secure a roof rack. Not only are you subjecting it to 70 mph + winds, you can't load anything on the rack. You are asking for a flying waffle to bash through someones windshield.

Don't be cheap, buy the ROLA basket mounting kit. Nothing touches the roof and all the hardware is great.

If you want something inexpensive, lightweight, easy to take on and off and pretty versitle, look at the Rhino Rack steel mesh platform.

I have the same rack, and I have been very happy with it. I am looking into switching my OEM crossbars for @apexoverland LFD bars...

Everybody, calm the F down about the zip ties. I haven't done that yet, just wondering. And I am talking about heavy duty zip ties with a 250 lb breaking strength and using at least one per corner or possibly two. That would be 1,000 to 2,000 lbs of breaking strength combined. As I said, I am worried that having the zip ties with some sharp bends in them as they travel around the rails and mesh of the basket would weaken them, not to mention cold, heat, UV rays, etc. U-bolts are obviously the strongest solution, just a pain sometimes to remove/install, and I would never do anything to endanger others on the road with flying crap. In the end, I'm sure I won't end up doing this as I wouldn't completely trust it.

BTW, someone asked what my typical load is on this rack. I'd estimate no more than 100 to 125 lbs, with 5 gal of water being the heaviest single item.

I was just commenting on heavy duty zip tie idea for easy removal.

they are really good, i got to use both the prototype and final product and am really happy with them. it's perfect if you want to kind of do something custom like your application since they are flat metal bars with regularly spaced holes so you can bolt down whatever you want.

I'm using their hi-lift mount and made my own mount for the x-bull boards (they have holes that fit maxtrax pins if you have maxtrax). They have some more products that will be announced soon, one in particular for the racks that i'm really looking forward too

I just ordered a Gamiviti full size expedition Rack from Tim. He has been making custom racks for Land Cruisers for 10 years but has branched out to 4runners a couple of years ago. His rack is somewhat similar to the Gobi rack but I like it a lot better. He additionally will customize the rack to however you want it; additional mesh, a drop down basket, additional gussets or light bar tabs, sunroof cutout, or whatever. His uses the factory mounting points and then two additional points up front using NutZerts. He is based out of Denver. He even customized some riser towers so I can mount Yakima cross bars if I choose. I can’t speak to the quality yet as I don’t have it but It’s gotten pretty rave reviews on the cruiser forums.

Unfortunately, zip ties will become significantly weaker in varying weather conditions, it doesn't really matter how heavy-duty/industrial they are . I see you're from Long Island. That freeze/thaw, sun exposure, rain, or any other element can be detrimental to the strength of that plastic zip tie.

I personally have the ROLA mounting kit and use the U bolts. It comes on and off in about 15 minutes!

Is there anything you would do differently instead of the 4 bars? I'm looking at 4 but wondering how many I can actually get away with, maybe even 3.

Exactly why I am not going to ever realistically use these. I was just totally spit balling with that idea, but would never actually do it. I don't think I'd ever trust plastic over metal u bolts. Just sometimes the u bolts are a PITA to remove and install.

You and me both! Been looking at getting 4 crossbars and the "light mounts" to kind of create a basket extension for the rack as my route.

I've got 6 installed right now, that's probably the max that fit. It just comes down to your budget. I like the look and flexibility of 6, but even just 2 is better than the factory bars. 4 is probably the intersection of usability and cost, but it's all pretty subjective for what your needs are.

Haha I've got 8 on right now I think, just because.

I've run with 4 since the summer, mainly holding my Maxtrax, hi-lift, random tools (bow saws, shovels, etc), lights and fuel.

How many bars you need depends on what you're looking to carry up there. You can always expand later.
