Alternative Toyota shocks for less than 3" lift?

I've read through the entire Lift Info & FAQ, and did a search & still can't find the info I'm looking for.

Any other Toyota trucks/ SUV's that have a shock that will work for the rear of a 3rd gen with 2-2.5" lift? I'm asking because I could find a cheap gently used set on Craigslist if I can figure out what else will work. I'm under the impression LC rear shocks will work for 3"+ lift in the rear, but will '00-'06 Tundra or 95.5-04 Tacoma rear shocks work for under 3" of lift in the rear?

I know I can order NEW shocks made for lifted 4runners, but just curious if anyone has run anything off of other Toyotas that's a direct swap.

God knows I'm no expert, but if you're just lifting it 2 - 2.5 inches, I'd just keep your stock shocks??

That being said, I bought a set of SkyJAckers that were made for 2.5 inches of lift.... but that's not an OEM part......

I just did the following to my 4runner with stock suspension.

New Monroe quick struts up front (preassembled with springs)

New Moog springs with monroe sensa track shocks in the rear.


This lifted my truck a good 1.5 inches + all around.

Tacos and tundras don't have shocks in the rear. They have leaf springs, which does not adapt to our trucks.

They do have shocks in the rear, they don't have coil springs in the rear.

LC shocks for 3"+ and stock 4runner shocks up to 2" lift, correct? Seems like there would be another Toyota shock from something that would fit in the missing gap? My stock shocks are toast, so I thought I'd replace them with something in better shape while I'm in there swapping coils in the near future.

If there is ..... it's not a common modification. Another thing to consider, even if the shock is longer, it may not be valved properly to handle the weight of the 4Runner. Good luck on the hunt though man!

They are a little soft but I've heard that fjcruiser springs work on the rear of our trucks and I can only imagine the shocks will be the right length as well for about 2.5"s of lift. Something to look into atleast.

I've run Bilstein HD's with OME 906's and trim pack spacers. Not exactly OEM but they're what Toyota uses on TRD packages.

I'm guessing FJC, 1st or 2nd gen Tacomas, LC(?), 4th gen 4Runner, 1st gen Tundra are all possibilities. I'm not sure of the shock design is the same as ours on all of those though as far as mounting design goes.

I was thinking HD or 5125 Billies are what I'd buy if I break down & buy new, it's just a matter of figuring out if I want to go through the headache of reasearching stock shock extended & collapsed lengths & digging up info on all of the above possibilities, then actually locating a used pair for a decent price. Probably why nobody's wanted to be the guinea pig on this experiment.

1st gen tundras and 2nd gen tacomas use the same style of shocks we do (eye on bottom and stud on top). Not sure on lengths though.

Rough Country Nitro 9000 Shocks from Wheeler's Off-Road, Inc

Not a bad deal if they've received good reviews; as they're about half of the Bilstein HD's I was looking at if going the new route.

Anybody know any websites that give extended & collapsed lengths for shocks along with a fitment guide? I know browsing the web that I've seen it somewhere, just can't find it again. If I can see what a stock T4R has, I can find out what the stock lengths are for Tundra's, Tacomas, etc. because it looks like most have the "Eye to Stud" rear shocks, and Tundras and Tacomas are far easier to find used shocks on Craigslist.

Sounds like FJ Cruiser rear shocks are on the list of possibilities, but not the easiest to find for under $75 as set USED. :dammit: Those Rough Country's are sounding better & better!

I'm putting in 906s, and they were more than enough for what I needed...just some occasional off road, no rock crawling. And from the reviews/threads I read people were generally happy with them. Keep in mind though, I came from a full size truck so anything I put on will be better than what I had ckmfort wise. Plus I'm replacing 170k shocks, so again, anything would be better.

Oh ya my lift...part is sitting in a box in my office, and the other part is coming home with my brother from Minnesota at the end of the month. My goal is to have it on the first week of April...wedding stuff is kind of getting in the way now. But I'll throw some pics up as soon as its installed...until then I'll let the suspense eat at you!
