Alternator Brush Replacement Question...

I asked this question in my build/maintenance thread, but I thought I would also ask in a separate thread too.

My charging system stopped working properly yesterday and my ODB Fusion app that is connected to a VeePeak bluetooth odb2 reader indicated that my system was at about 11.3 volts and dropping.

I did a little research on t4r.org and watched Tim and Sean's brush holder replacement video and found that a lot of people replace the brushes rather than going with a whole new alternator. So, I pulled the alternator last night to see 1) what type of alternator I have and 2) to inspect the brushes. I found that I have a Denso and it might be the original. I also found the brushes to be severely worn down.

It looks like the style of my brush holder is different than most others I've seen. Here's the one I see referenced in most of the DIYs. It's part number 27370-75060.

When I do a parts search for my '97 V6 on camelback's site, it says I need part number 27371-70300 and it looks like it's just the brushes, not the brushes and the brush holder. I assume there's some soldering involved to install the brushes in the brush holder?

Does anyone know which would be the correct one for me to order?

Get the Denso model number off the side of your alternator and visit your local Toyota dealership. With the alternator model number and your VIN, maybe they can find you the right brushes. You'll pay more at the dealership but I've found it's worth the extra money to have somebody knowledgeable look it up for you and find the correct part you need.

I to have a 97 which doesn't appear to have the brush assembly as 1 easy to replace unit.

Well, I boogered up one of the brush holder screws and ended up buying a re-manufactured alternator with a lifetime warranty from Autozone.
 
The kit will be here on Thursday. Then I'll start to play. The OEM Denso I'll put a 15 dollar brush holder assembly from Toyota in along with the bearings from the kit if they feel bad.

Like some brush holders I was hoping the Denso ones had a little hole that you used to hold the brushes back while installing the holder.

I ordered the Brush Holder Assembly from the dealer today along with a Bluetooth Mic for the 97 Limited Puppy Hauler to finally complete the Scion T1819 install.

Both will be here tomorrow and the Brush holder was 21 dollars. Internet dealers want 16 dollars and eBay and Amazon want 28-30 dollars for the brush holder. Plus I get it tomorrow. Win win.

Before that brush material was also packed around the slip ring too.

maybe its me and my rig. I did new Toyota brushes and after install the voltage was at 12.9. I thought ....ok...I screwed up...but I had no time to play again, so I figured Id let it ride till next week and pull it apart again.
after a few days voltage was back in specs. so maybe they need time to conform to the round rotor since new brushes are flat
rounded off after a few miles fit the contact surface better
I'm gonna go with that theory since its all working good now and in specs

Brushes need bedded in even if they have the slip ring shape already.

To bed in the new brushes on our big 200-300hp DC motors we used a white stone that polished the commentator and the white power acted like an abrasive and helped the brushes bed in faster.

Looks like it's my turn. Voltage is at 10.0 today and dropping, I bookmarked this a few months back since I saw warning signs my alternator was not up to the task anymore. Luckily I work right next to a dealership. Any tips or words of wisdom? I'll go for the whole brush assembly if they can order it, will make things easier.
 
Get the whole assembly. I've done the 70a and 80a alt. My build and repair thread should have the part numbers for both Alts.

Any reason to replace bearings and regulator? I would figure mine would be fine since it doesn't make any noise on it's own (bearings) and never had any voltage spikes (regulator).
