Alternator dead, tensioner questionable and my old man brain

I'm preparing to replace the above 2 items and while reading threads, it looks like if I'm in that deep I should probably consider the timing belt / water pump status. I have an 06 V8 purchased in 2012 with about 110k on the clock. My *memory* was that the timing belt/water pump had been done. However, looking through the owner's previous records I don't see these as having been addressed. I've had several Toyota SUVs over the years and now I'm concerned my old man brain remembers a timing belt replacement on a different rig. If so, I'm at ~170k on the original pump/belt. I think at this point the incremental cost/effort is absolutely justified by the risk I'm taking if in fact I'm still on the OE parts. Even if it was done around 100k, it's probably not that far off from being due again.

So - as long as I have the front end of the rig torn apart, anything else I should consider addressing that might save me pulling it apart again soon?

Check ToyotaCare online records and CarFax to see if there's any record that the timing belt was replaced. It it was done on schedule, you've got ~20K miles left on the current one...no point in doing it early.

You my friend have made my day! I feel a little I feel a little dumb for my lapse, but I did find the record for Toyota Care and it jogged my memory. It wasn't done when I bought it, so I negotiated accordingly and dropped it off at the dealer to have the work done before I even brought it home. So I only have about 50k on the current belt/pump!

Thanks for the assist!

SO the timming belt should be good to go, but while you're replacing the tensioner I would also replace the idler pully and the serpetine belt.

I have a new belt, and did pop the old one off to check pulleys. The idler is buttery smooth - is it worth replacing anyway?

Did my timing belt a couple months ago. If you are talking about the accessory belt tensioner (alt, power steering) - then this gets you about 25% of the way to replacing the timing belt. There is A LOT more involved to get to the timing belt. As AuSeeker said, replace the tensioner, idler pulley and belt while you are replacing the alternator. I actually wish I had bought new accessory belt tensioner and idler pulley when I did my timing belt.

If you are ok with doing the labor if it goes out a week after you did the tensioner then it you are good. It is really a piece of mind if it still works. For me, I'm going to replace it all at once - belt, tensioner and idler.
