I have a spare used alternator from an '05 T4R. When I opened it up to install a new set of OEM brushes, it became apparent that the brush holder assembly is different from the original.
Specifically, it is deeper than the original (front to back), it has a closed back whereas the original is open on both ends, and it does not utilize the two rubber gaskets that the original brush holder uses presumably due to the open front & back design of the original.
More worrying, however, is that the two metal ears used to screw in the new brush holder end up a couple of mm above the studs into which the screws go. That's because the new brush holder is deeper (front to back) than the original.
I checked the parts site, and the brush holder assembly I bought is the correct one that Toyota lists for this year's alternator. It superseded two or three part numbers that came before it.
So, my question is to those who have experience replacing the old style brush holder with the new: did the higher placement of the ears cause long term durability or performance problems in your alternator and misalignment of the brushes with the rotor shaft?
