In Texas, and Oklahoma, when you're in the country on a two lane road with a good sized emergency lane, people who are going slower will move over so you can pass more safely.

This is illegal, the person should pass in the on-coming traffics lane... yet its courteous. Extremely courteous. I love driving in the country. People wave... give you room to pass It's just nice. When I'm in the country and someone needs to pass me, I move over into the emergency strip if I can do so safely.

Yet on the freeway, everyone feels entitled (not excluding myself in anyway) and drives aggressively. For the most part in Texas (not in the major cities) people will move over if you approach them in the fast lane.

But not in Arkansas. Those shit bags will sit in the passing lane for miles doing exactly the speed limit, or 1 mph over the speed limit, passing the trucks doing the speed limit. I do 8-10 over on the freeway typically. Sweet mother of god I've wanted to leave a bag of burning poop on a few select porches in Arkansas. The farther East of Little Rock the worse it gets.

Where in Arkansas did you find anyone doing the speed limit? Every time I've run 71 from Texark up to Ft. Smith all the Granny Clampetts are out doing 20 under on those windy 2 lane roads where you can't pass! And naturally, every time I get stuck behind Granny, here comes the OP in a logging truck crawling up on my rear bumper trying to plow all of us off the road! :redbrick: I hate that drive. Hope I never have to do it again!

As to the rural road manners in Texas, I was surprised by that. Sure is nice though! And I do return the favor.

Just for clarification, oh logical one, which rules do and do not apply to you? Your story doesn't align. You said traffic was at or near 90, yet you're doing 105. You need to better read into what I said. Never did I say that I camp out. Never did I say that I will disallow people from passing me. You're not even touching my argument because you cannot seem to understand it in context.

Let me clearly state this for you. I have no vigilante intent, nor do I ride the fast lane in hopes of keeping those less discerning from maintaining their speed. However, if you're riding my tailgate while I'm already traveling well beyond the marked LIMIT, honking, flashing lights, and attempting to intimidate, you will have ZERO affect on my driving habits. I'm not changing my driving style in order to accommodate your inconsideration for everyone's safety. When the convenient and safe opportunity comes for me to pull to the side, I will do so. If that does not satisfy you, then so be it.

I would expect nothing less from anyone else on the highway.

However, being an aggressive douche on the highway is never justified, regardless of how anyone else decides to drive. Just as stated earlier, arrive maybe annoyed and a few minutes later, but arrive none the less. There are far more important things to concern ourselves with and be outraged by than allowing oneself to become belligerent over peole not going out of their way to accommodate your reckless driving of 30mph over the speed limit.

The past 3 weeks I have tracked probably 3,000 miles to and from Vegas to idaho 2 time with a trip from Vegas to Arizona and back.

Utah Nevada and Arizona drivers are the worst. Utah being the absolute worst state.
The normal flow of traffic is 10 mph above the posted speed with some going the posted speed and some going. 20 over. Those going the limit seem to make it to the left lane and congest traffic for multiple cars behind them. I have found that the majority of traffic is in the left two lanes.

In missouri we don't have this problem. Drivers move over promptly same with i80 and i70 when I take long trips.

I think the use of the HOV lane screws up the flow of traffic. Yes it keeps flowing traffic during busy times but for the most part you get those people who are going slower than the flow in the left lane.

Each of these states have a HOV lane where as missouri does not. That's my observation.

Interesting conversation. My understanding for the last 35 years has been if you are not in the actual act of passing someone you should be in the right lane, regardless of speed. PERIOD.

This rule obviously changes in urban areas where thru traffic would/should normally be in the 2 left lanes while merging or exiting traffic should be in the 2 right lanes. One of my pet peeves when driving through Houston is the idiots who park in the far left lane of 4 or 5 lanes of traffic and wait until they are 100 yards from their exit to sling across all 4 lanes to make said exit. If you're too preoccupied with your phone/stereo/speeding and you just blew your exit, then just start moving over for the next one so you can turn around. There's no point in giving 4 lanes of traffic a heart attack because you blew the pooch!

We just passed a law in Louisiana that states if you are in the left lane, regardless of your speed, and someone comes up behind you, you must move over. I don't agree this should even NEED to be written into law. The law should simply state KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS. K.I.S.S........

Actually our interstate system was patterned after the autobahn. In Germany, if u don't pull over quickly, the approaching driver can take down ur license number and have a fat ticket mailed to u! I was doing 120 outside Munchen and learned quick to GTFO of the way! Granny blew by me in a RUF turbo!!!

It is nice to drive or ride in a Country that takes operating a motor vehicle seriously.

Here there are too many self-appointed tools that do not know the laws, but have taken it upon themselves to try to enforce one or two that they deem worthy of their passive-aggressive antics.

I recall riding along with a buddy in his unmarked Police Car. There was one of those passive-aggressive morons self-enforcing the posted speed limit in the passing lane. Traffic was becoming a cluster-f*ck due to this idiot. So my buddy gets behind him, and runs the plate. He finds several unpaid tickets. All this time the guy is still camped-out in the left lane, "enforcing" the speed limit.

My buddy puts on his blinker as a subtle hint to yield the left lane to faster traffic, as the law dictates. The guy shows us his IQ, by putting up his middle finger. My buddy gives a brief flash of the headlights, and the guy grenades his brakes in response.

That's when my buddy had finally had enough, and hits the lights and sirens. The guy pulls over and is full of excuses, and insists it is his "duty" to slow all those speeding maniacs down. My buddy points out that the most dangerous motorist on that stretch of road, was him. Needless to say he got several new tickets, and was arrested for not taking care of prior tickets. His car was also towed.

The bottom line: Keep right except to pass.

I'll be the first one to admit that Speed Limits tend to be more "suggestions" to me, granted I don't know anyone in California who drives the Speed Limit except people who have a death wish or own a Hybrid/Electric vehicle (though I suppose both people fit in the same category come to think of it for various reasons.) I don't see a single person not doing at minimum 10+, not to mention technically in California there is a stipulation that a driver can be ticketed for a violation if they are going slower than the flow of traffic (even if the flow of traffic is faster than the speed limit, it creates an unsafe driving environment; it sort of a not oft enforced law though.) The reality is that at any given point of driving you're more than likely breaking one or more vehicular laws regardless of how "goody two-shoes" you try to be, they're made to be broken mostly for police to have probably cause on suspicious vehicles (at least this is what a few friendly officers I know have passed along to me.)

More times than not I find the most unsafe, idiotic, and downright dangerous drivers to be the slowest, self-righteous, and typically unable to operate a vehicle in emergency situations people you see on the road... Think Prius Driver going 64mph in the "Fast Lane" and when you try to pass them after signalling for a good minute they try and run you off the road.

Sure you have some people who need a bit of anger management like the OP, but there's a ton more people who shouldn't even be allowed to touch a multi-ton vehicle let alone operate them on a public road before the OP needs his license yoinked in my honest opinion.

Almost every accident and/or near accident I have ever been apart of or witness to has been the result of an incompetent driver/human being who should not have ever been allowed to operate that vehicle under any means due to their lack of skill in all conditions (particularly inability to handle emergencies and maneuvers that should be expected of a responsible vehicle operator), lack of brain cells (texting, cellphone use, can't even scan the road ahead properly, tailgating, ect.), and inability to develop the needed critical thinking skills to be safe (let alone breathe properly... the fact they manage that amazes me.)

I agree with the OP, and with Wake Rider.

First off, let me say that I usually do 10 over, sometimes 15+. BUT, in my 15+ moments, I'm ususally the only one on the road for a good little stretch, which there's plenty of on my regular commute to HKY, or I'm going at like 2AM when there's no one on the roads.

That being said:

Slow people that camp in the fast lane is a burden to everyone, and dangerous. 100%. Can't tell you the number of times I've been driving to or from Hickory to LeJeune, or vice versa, and had some slow ass holding traffic up for a good 30 minutes+ because he was afraid to get in the skinny pedal and move the **** out of the way. Most annoying thing in the world.

Yes. I'll pass someone on the right side if they're sitting there for a long time, or if there's room for me to do so. Get over it.

HOWEVER; I also can't tell you the number of time's I've almost been rear ended by some jackoff doing 90+ in a 65, and realize that traffic isn't moving as fast as he is, and have to slam on his brakes and swerve off the road.

With the disclaimer that I am more of a speed demon than a slow poke, I will say, that if I'm doing above the posted speed limit, and you want to pass me, I will do my best to get out of your way.

If it's just me in the car, hell, I'll speed up and then let you take the lead and follow you, so you get the ticket.

HOWEVER, if I have my family in the car, and you want to come up my ass, flashing your lights, honking, ect at me, you're going to get the cops called on your ass for aggressive driving, and putting my familys life on the line, if you're lucky. I might just follow you and beat the **** out of you for doing that. All it takes is one little thing to go wrong at that speed, then shit really goes wrong.

Bottom line:

Get out of the fast lane if you've got people up your ass driving.

Don't be a ****tard and ride up people's ass, flashing your lights, honking your horn, ect. Take a ****ing K-pin, and relax.

OK, 100mph is excessive, but I do agree that you should always keep right. I get really annoyed when people veer out into the passing/fast lane when you are clearly approaching at a fast speed and they force you to brake so they can inch past the car they are trying to overtake. Why can't you just let me go first so you don't slow anyone down!?

I don't feel that I own the road anymore than they do, but it just seems like common sense to me. Just like the same people who merge onto highways at 40-50mph and HAVE to "merge" as soon as they get to the dashed line rather than making full use of the merge lane to get up to highway speed.
