Amsoil 15w-40 Diesel Oil?

Yes I know about the other thread but I didnt want to clog up the debate when mine is specific.

Ok guys so my grandpa passed away about 6 months ago and my grandma finally sold his 09 dodge 2500 cummins.

He was an amsiol fanatic and if i want it, I have access to 2 5 gallon jugs and around 40 quart jugs of Amsoil 15w40 oil.

What are your thoughts on running this in our 4runners? I am in Idaho so it gets to around 100 MAX in the summer and down to the teens in the winter on the coldest days. Average winter is around 30 and average summer is around 80.

I also have already taken 2 gallons of Amsoil full synthetic transmission fluid and enough Amsoil full synthetic gear oil (yes correct weight) to do my diffs and transfer case. I plan to do the tranny and diffs in a couple weeks after getting back from the Baja 1000 race.

Its too thick. You will have a hard time with the starts when its cold. Get the proper weight oil. The owners manual calls for a certain weight oil for a reason. If you go too thick you risk not getting oil into the proper spots. If its too thin you risk not having lubrication where it needs it as well.

I run 5-30 all winter and 10-30 spring summer and fall. The 10-30 is great here in the desert since we see 110º on some of the hot days

Save yourself the headache, its the wrong weight and you shouldnt use it.

I currently run mobil 1 10w30 year round (as I have in all my vehicles) and am very happy with it. I would just hate to pass up $500 or 4 years worth of oil changes if I can use it.

It's viscosity is going to be higher than what Toyota speced, but it also has a pour point of -40° F.

Most conventional 5w30's have a pour point around -33° F. So the Synthetic 15w40 Amsoil will flow better than a conventional 5w30, at extremely cold temps.

In addition to the Diesel engine API certifications, it's also SM rated.

You could call Amsoil and ask them, but if your ambient temps won't be anywhere near or below -40° F, I personally would run it.

find another amsoil dealer close by and see if you can trade him for 5-30 or 10-30. im sure there are plenty of guys up there with diesels who would buy up the 15-40 from the dealer.
