An oil goo on my driver's side whatchamacallit. Doesn't look normal.

I was underneath my truck grinding away my bumper to fit my wheel spaced tires and noticed this oil all over the driver's side whatever mechanism. I checked the passenger side to see if such a leak was normal but the passenger side is dry and clean.

Is something broken? What should I check here?

Looks like your CV boots are torn or leaking at the clamp. Pretty common

Inspect it more closely. If the CV boot isn't torn, you can try a new steel band. There's a good thread in here for that. Worse case scenario, it's torn somewhere. I just replaced my driver's side half shaft due to a torn boot. Took about an hour to do with hand tools and a friend.

It's a black, thick CV joint grease. Auto parts stores sell the grease packet if you wish to try to repack it.

Halfshaft boot is smoked. Plan on replacing the shaft as the split boots are crap and the joint is likely cooked now anyway.
