Andy MOD 2.0 w/real TRAC Off Switch

This is just a quick write-up on the Andy MOD 2.0 using a real TRAC Off switch from a Toyota Avalon.

I want to start by thanking four members. Without their help, I would not have been able to make this happen.

Like many other members, I want to keep the stock interior look as much as possible. I started out by using a Toyota Avalon factory TRAC Off switch that I picked up from a fellow member.


This switch is normally open, and needs to have a relay to operate it. I picked up a 5 pin BWD R3074 relay from my local Autozone.



I then cut the red wire with the black trace for the Andy MOD 2.0. From here I used butt connectors on each end of the wires to extend them about 12" to the relay. This is a basic drawing of the wiring outline for the relay. These wires are run to 87A and 30 on the relay.



From here I used 86 as my power and 85 as my ground. My power is coming from an open spot on the fuse block under the dash on the drivers side. With the ground being directly below (picture shows it halfway cut off).



I have the main power from the fuse box running into the TRAC Off switch, and out to the relay (86). You can see the four wires all hooked up here.



I then mounted the relay to one of the screws used to secure the gauge cluster.



Next, I ran the wires to the location on the dash I used.




This is the final result. You can see that I moved the security module to another location. I swapped the security module and the CDL switch. Now I have the TRAC Off and CDL side by side.

Nice write up. Very useful for me now. After I saw the Avalon switch earlier on a thread I was going to go this route as well. Like both switches next to each other too.

I believe the 01-02 2wd 4runners had them
4th gen Camry
If I recall some of the early scion models had them

Hop on ebaymotors and do a search for 'Toyota trac switch' and that should give you some options.

From what I can tell, part number is 84986-07010, but I'm only getting that for a 00-04 Avalon. Found one on ebay for a Lexus ES300, but don't know the part number. I'm sure the part was used on Toyota/Lexus/Scions but don't know which models.

The switch being normally open is easy to figure out. In older style wiring, it's a simple power/ground setup. Without the switch being engaged, the traction control system is not supplied power, meaning it's open. Closing the circuit powers the system, engaging the traction control. Now on newer cars with CAN/LAN systems, it's a totally different animal.

Easiest thing to do is to hook an ohm meter up to it. Put you ohm setting on lowest setting you have. Use to two outside pins to measure your current passing though. If the switch is normally open you'll see <1 ohm on the meter. If the switch is normally closed you'll see a large jump. When you hold the button in is when you'll notice something <1 ohm, and this is closed. Open means nothing is passing through, and closed means it is passing through.

Locate the VSC computer under the dash near the driver’s kick panel. The connector you are interested in is the 2nd one from the top (V18). Pull this connector out and locate Terminal V18-3. It’s a Red wire with Black Tracer. (EDIT: Note that the pin diagram below is as you look at the back of the connector - where the wires go into the connector.)



Did you check the switch to make sure you actually need a relay? Are you using an add-a-fuse? If so, are you have fuses in both spots? Ground at a good spot?

So I abandoned the thought of a relay, i figured it was senseless. I grounded the switch and fused the incoming line, and fused the ground.. I obviously grabbed the wrong wire.. It was red and white tracing on it ith grey dabs every 2 inches..

In order to use the switch I have you HAVE to use a relay. Are you just using a normal rocker switch instead? If you're using a switch like mine with no relay, your trac/vsc lights will be on all the time. That switch is normally open/normally closed. The relay is there to make it think the opposite; normally closed/normally open. Normally closed being the system is working. Once you hold the button in for a couple seconds and release, the switch opened and broke the contact. At this point your lights will come on the system is not working.

You can use another switch an avoid having to wire in the relay. I didn't like the way that looked and chose this route. It took me a bit to figure out, but it was well worth the time I put in.

Edit: I'm a bit hyper I just ordered one off Ebay from a 02 Lexus ES300. I'm guessing I can make this work somehow :noidea:

This one is like the one I have. There is a plug for it, but you need one to use it. You only need to use the outside pins, and the middle one is NOT used. The one I have is actually from an Avalon, but I'm pretty sure the link above is the same thing.

All you have to do is test it with an ohm meter to it figure out.
