Annoying issue

97 4runner 4x4 auto


So Everytime I come to a sudden stop my truck does this weird thing. it's like the trans didn't down shift all the way into first as I come to a stop and when I go to take off ill roll half a foot and then you can hear and feel a clunk and I can physically see the trans shifter move a little.kind of like I stopped too quick for the trans to have time to shift down but obviously this shouldn't happen regardless of if I'm skidding tires to stop (which I'm not)

Did a bunch of drain and refills and the problem still persist.

When was the last time you lubed its driveline? Max 3 pumps on the slider. Use moly #2.

The 'clunk' you hear is caused by the rear end lifting up on stops, the driveline is compressing, your brakes are holding it in place until you let go and accelerate. This should take care of most if not all that clunk. Luck! :banana:

This does not sound like a driveline issue at all. Next time you do this keep on eye on the RPMs. This will be an indicator for you if it is the transmission or not.

When the clunk happens the Rpms don't pop up as if it downshifted.

When I first got it it would nose dive really bad.so I adjusted rear drums And put new rotors and pads up front .and it still nose dove really bad leading me to weak struts.so maybe this clunking could be weak struts??? It dosent do it everytime I brake and sometimes it dosent even do it when I stop really fast.

My '05 tundra does this every now and then. Only when coming to a stop at a downhill angle. Hasn't happened on my '99 sr5 runner. Two others I know (one tundra and one runner) have this issue too. A buddy of mine who's a Toyota service tech said it was the tranny dropping into first gear but had no remedy for the issue. All fluids and parts in good order so I just ran with it. Still kinda baffles me though!

Also, no rpm change. Mine happens at complete stops with my foot still on the brake pedal. I guess that kinda rules out the driveline being the cause.
