Another Gobi rack thread...

So I have looked at many different racks and have decided to go with the Gobi rack. I like the stealth and how the front bars are shaped to give some protection for the lights. I have a couple of questions though before I take the plunge and spend a crap ton of on money on it. First, it looks like the fairing touches the roof of the vehicle. Has anybody had any issues with the fairing leaving marks because of this? Second, why are there big gaps underneath the cross bars? To help attach accessories? If I remember right, you don't have to access the cross bars from underneath using after market accessories from companies like Yakima and Thule. I will be using the rack primarily for storing gear when there is not enough room in the cab. Take your time with your answers and any pictures would be helpful! It will be a while before I purchase it. I will be using my tax return to pay for the thing! Hopefully I don't change my mind before then!

One thing to consider is the cross bars. I opted to only have the front cross bar so that everything I pack will be "boxed" in on the rack. If I ever need to use the cross bars for accessories, I use my Thule Rapid Crossroad bars to clamp onto the Gobi's side rails. Works flawlessly with my RTT system.

I've found that a level flat space is needed more than the permanent crossbars that Gobi installs.


I have recently removed the original front crossbar that Gobi installed. If you get the sunroof insert, you'll have a completely flat roof rack surface to pack things.


With no cross bars in the way, you can pack everything flat and without concern of where the bars are.

I just started seriously looking at full length racks and was curious about your statement. What makes the Gobi standout out as compared to a bajarack or one of Drabbit's racks?

Having now seen the gobi I would say the only advantage is that the powder coat finish is better then the camel back metal gear (drabbits). If you plan to get a gobi ladder the price difference isn't as much but I still came out cheaper with the CMG rack including shipping. $300-$400 is still a lot of money, if you got it down under $200 for the difference it'd be a harder decision. I'm still happy with my decision and purchase, gobi makes a nice product for sure though.

are cross bars needed on the Gobi to mount the tent? I am picking up an ARB RTT when I get home and the stealth rack I have had it's cross bars removed. I figured the tent should mount fine to either side but not sure if it needs support for the span.

Funny, I'll be in Sacramento in Sept with my 4Runner. I am looking to make a custom rack with no cross bars but a good deal on a rack might change my mind! Any particular reason you are getting rid of it?

gobi has been around for a while. the gobi stands out from the rest because of the designed.Low profile no wind noise unlike the baja and drabbits racks. Once I was ready to purchase it the wind noise was a big turn off for me. I spoke with both companies bajarack and drabbits and both stated that their racks produce wind noise. not much but enough for me to say NO.:wtf: I had a gobi on my FJ and never had any issues with the wind. Save your money and go for the GOBI. Plus their warranty is one of the best and has pre installed wires for front and rear lights.:banana::banana::banana::banana:

You need cross bars of some sort. The tent is not wide enough to mount to the side rails of the Gobi. At least, I'm pretty sure it's not.
