@ Runner27: I did not notice any significant weakness in the grille frame by leaving the sides as-is after cutting away the center bar. I did add two vertical support rods (3/16" threaded rod) that tie the top and bottom together structurally. It is actually very strong now and like I said, a very solid "thunk" upon closing the hood. I would say that it is as strong as, if not stronger than, the original grille.
I'll post pics from the back side so you can see the work back there.
I'm glad I took the hit and got the new grille to work with because a few of the bolts sheared off while removing the original grille. Have a couple extra nuts available for the install. (made in Japan = metric)
