Another Lower Ball joint thread

Just did my LBJs today!
Absolutely NO disrespect meant for any other authors of writeup on LBJs, but the critical info always seems to be kinda disorganized; it's all there, but split over several pages/ posts with comments and pictures in the way. My info came from several different threads on a few different forums over the past couple months. I had to bookmark different pages on the SAME threads to easily locate necessary info.
That being said, I'm going to have the main technical info straightforward here at the top of the page in the first post.
I won't name who I got the all info from, because I'll probably forget several people, but rest assured, if you've posted any technical info on LBJs, I've read that post and at least taken it into account. So thank you, you nameless helpful people.

This is ONLY for LBJ replacement, and this is NOT a walkthrough.



Necessary parts to buy:
- Right LBJ: 43330-39585
- Left LBJ : 43340-39465
- 8 LBJ bolts : 90080-10066
- 2 cotter pins for tie rod castle nuts (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.)
The LBJs come with their own castle nut and cotter pin

Necessary tools to have:
- 14mm socket (preferably 6 point 1/2 drive) (Harbor Freight part# 69279)
- 19mm socket (preferably 6 point 1/2 drive) (Harbor Freight part# 69279)
- 24mm socket (preferably 6 point 1/2 drive) (Harbor Freight part# 69279)
I had seen somewhere that
22mm was used, and unless this
is a size used in aftermarket LBJs
(which is not recommended) that
is WRONG. The size is 24mm.
- Breaker bar (preferably 1/2 drive) (Harbor Freight part# 60819)
- Torque wrench capable of at least 110 lb/ft (preferably 1/2 drive) (Harbor Freight part# 62431)
- 1/2 drive 3 inch extension (helps to torque around the brake rotor)
- Needle nose pliers to straighten and remove old cotter pins
- Tie Rod Puller (AutoZone part #27022)
- Pitman Tool (AutoZone part #27016)
- 5/16 open end wrench to tighten the AutoZone brand pullers.
- Blue loctite for the 8 LBJ bolts
- A can of PB Blaster to use liberally in the days leading up to the job

Sizes and torque ratings:
- 14mm is used on the 8 LBJ bolts with torque rating of: 59 ft/lb
- 19mm is used on the tie rod castle nuts with torque rating of: 67 ft/lb
- 24mm is used on the LBJ castle nuts with torque rating of: 105 ft/lb

I actually did watch it and use it a lot; it was my main info source. My only 'problem' with a video (not even yours, just videos in general) is the straight list of info. It DID say everything throughout the entire video(and I even screen shot that little piece of paper) but if there was anything that I missed, I had to scroll back again a find the exact time, pause, repeat, all with dirty hands. The video is great to watch before hand to see the steps and great to watch during, but for over-preparers like myself, seeing things completely written out in a list form is useful and reassuring. I can double check my info before I start with a quick glance; I don't have to find an exact second in a video.

I hope this didn't come across mean at all; your video was very helpful, and you listed the steps perfectly.

Just to clarify, NONE of this info is my own; it's simply a condensed list of info that I've put together and proven accurate as of yesterday.

I believe I have at least 1 aftermarket Outer Tie rod that threw me a curve. I had a 21mm socket, a 23mm socket, but no 22mm. The Castle Nut was somewhere in between, most likely a 22mm. I was able to use my 23mm to break it free and Torque it down. Its definitely going in my log book for future owners.
