Another remote question - Please help!

Well this is quite a way to start off on my first post, but I could really use some help...

I have a 1999 SR5 4x4 5 speed that I purchased about a year ago. Of course they did not have any remotes but the PO said that he had just lost them. I really have not been to concerned about it but I decided to see my options were.

I fund the instructions to check that my 4runner was compatible with a remote and it appeared to pass the test by entering programing mode. I picked up remote on eBay that I just received tonight and now I wish that I had just left well enough alone! The remote that I found is an HYQ1512Y which I believe is the correct model.

So now to the problem -

I have followed the programing instructions uses the one key turn, two key turn, and five key turn proceedures in various combinations all withe same results. When I press the lock and unlock buttons and then immediately press the lock button the locks cycle twice which I understand as meaning that the remote was not accepted.

So the instructions say to go back to pressing the lock and unlock buttons again, but as soon I do that the locks cycle twice... and for that matter no matter what buttons or combination of buttons I push the locks always cycle twice.

I hope that I am just missing something, I hopefully your wisdom will help me see the error of my ways.

Trying slowing down... I noticed that when I was doing it and trying to rush it, it took like 10 tries. Had a beer, kicked my dog a few times to calm my nerves, got it first try.
 
Do you have a security light in the center console near the AC vent? If you don't then more then likely, you don't have keyless entry.

You might have a dealer installed system but that would be under the seat and it requires a different fob and different programming instructions.
 
No security light on the console... hmm ... I must have missed that as a requirement.

So even though the system appears to go into programing mode, it is possible that the vehicle DOES NOT have the ability to pair with the remote? I don't believe that there is a dealer installed module. First of all no module that I can find and no security light on the left side of the dash.

I feel like the computer (or whatever controls the car side) is picking up the signal from the remote which is why it is immediately cycling the lock twice. Because of this I assume that the remote is operating, that the vehie is equipt with the key less system, and that I am just doing somethig wrong on my side.

I did buy this from an eBay seller who will accept returns so that maybe the only choice at this point. I just want to make sure. I have previously contacted two dealers... one said that the 4runner did not have key less the other said that all SR5s came standard and neither even did a look up on the VIN.

Has anyone else had the double cycle everytie they push a button on the remote?

I actually tried again this morning.... with a little patience :confused: and still nothing.

I used the "5 turn" proceedure which should have removed all of the old codes from the system... I also tried the "2 turn" method which some say will delete any existing codes and add a new remote pairing.

It is amazing to me that there does not seem to be a definitive answer from Toyota on this... and it does seem to be a common issue since there are a number of threads on this site and others that never seem to reach a resolution.

Any more thoughts?

I really appreciate everyone's input so far... At this point I am bound and determined to find out what the heck is going on!

I understand your pain........my remote still doesnt work.

In order to make it go into programming mode I had to physically pull up the drivers side door lock when cycling, otherwise it would never go into programming mode. Go slow and give that a try.

FYI when I do get the truck into programming mode it will not accept the key fob. Once in prog mode I press the lock button, locks cycle, still no go. Repalced the battery on the fob so I know its not that. Same exact problem as you.... I have a 99 SR5 :ybrick:
 
There seem to be two common problems -

The first is not being able to enter into the programming mode. As far as I can tell, this is usually due to bad actuators, which requires a little help in manually living the drivers door locks... or not following the instructions completely. The dealer installed system does not seem to affect this portion of the proceedure.

The second is not being able to pair the remote to the vehicle. There are a couple of different causes for not being able to add a new remote -

-- Dealer installed alarm uses a different key fob remote than the keykess entry system. If you have the security light to the left of the steering wheel then you cannot program the four button remote HYQ1512Y.

-- Too many remotes registered with system. When you try to register a new remote and don't have and existing remote, just use the two key turn procedure when entering programing as it appears to remove all existing remote coees and only install the new one.

-- If you get to the point where you press the lock and unlock buttons and the lock DO NOT actuate at all, the just keep trying... eventually it seems to work.

-- And then the last situation is where most people seem to be stuck... if you press the lock and unlock buttons and locks actuate TWICE then you seem to be SOL. Assuming that you have the correct remote, do not have the dealer installed security, and are actually in programming mode... there does not seem to be a solution??

This last issue is where I and many others are currently at and there does not seem a confirmed answer. My gut feeling is that not all SR5s have key less contrary to what some dealers say. It would be really nice to get a difinitive answer...

I had the exact same symptoms as you, I would go through the whole procedure and then get the double-lock response. I was using a 1512 remote that I got from Ebay. I do not have a security light. Anyway, I sent the remote back and got a new one with FCC code HYQ12BAN. With all of my practice on the programming procedure, I got this one linked the first try.

One thing: I have the original window sticker, and it says that my 99 has "Option Package 2", which includes some kind of security I think. Toyota may be able to tell if you have this package from your VIN..

this may be worth a try, the only solution listed for the double-lock reject problem so far
 
I am actually planning to go to the dealership for some warranty work (different car) and I am going to see what I can find. Hopefully something helpfull!

I almost just purchased the "ban" remote to try it, but I decided to wait and see what the dealer guys say...

Take the car to the dealer and they can program it for you for free if you are lucky. For them it is piece of cake only takes a few seconds. I had the same problem and struggled for a week and wasted 5 hours before I took it to the dealer.
 
So I have finally found a remote that works. After discussing my problem with the dealership parts counter, the guy that I was working with ordered a new remote based on the VIN.... and the remote is a HYQ12BBX. Programmed first try no problem!

If anyone is interested I can share more details, but the gist is that the HYQ1512Y does not work but the 12BBX does even though the 1512Y was confirmed as operational on another vehicle.

Thank you for sharing the correct part numbers, i recently removed the horribly installed aftermarket remote system from mine and was trying to figure out what remote i needed to get.
 
Yes Wilson is correct... do check!

Obviously the HYQ1512Y does work with many 99s, but in my case it did not. The parts guy felt that the HYQ12BBX might replace a couple of older models but did not have any way to confirm this.

I wonder if this has something due to date of manufacture...?
