Another roof rack/basket question.

Hey guys Im sorry to post another one of these but I'm unfamiliar with roof racks and don't want to make the wrong purchase.

I own a 2014 4runner Limited and want to put a Küat Vagabond on the roof.

My Questions is about the crossbars. I initially was looking at getting the OEM toyota crossbars, but have read concerns about strength of the OEM crossbars. I've been looking at getting ROLO crossbars or the Thule crossbars for increased strength.

I did like the streamline look of the OEM because they fit into the factory parallel bars, and it seems like the stronger aftermarket crossbars sit up higher.

Any comments on what crossbars i should get would be much appreciated. Thanks so much

I've been debating if I wanted to go with a fully rack from Gobi or Baja or just get crossbars and the Kuat. When all is said and done the prices are not really much higher for the full rack when you consider the functionality and looks ($675 versus $900+/-). If i were going to get crossbars, these are what I'd go with.

If i were going to get a rack I'd get one from drabbits or Whitson.

I don't think the weight capacity of the factory crossbars is the issue. It's the rather thin walled full length notched aluminum parallel factory rails that are cutting the weight capacity (Any excess weight is applied on the lower split portion of the rail because the clamps are on the inside of it). If you think you'll be adding more than ~130 - 150 lbs up there I would recommend a 3/4 length aftermarket rack with the larger footprint bases and thicker material, or better aftermarket crossbars that mount to some point on the roof. If you only plan on bikes and maybe a full cooler you should be fine with the factory crossbars.

The Thules linked above would provide a better weight supporting footprint because they would go over the top of the factory rails instead of inside the cuts.
