Another sunroof post. Help!

Let me first say, I've already done a search on this matter. And I've already tried holding the button down for :30 seconds and I've also tried disconnecting the battery. Nothing has worked.

A few weeks back I bumped the sunroof button getting to my sunglasses. The glass/window was frozen along the edges so although the mechanism was pulling it open it wasn't going anywhere. I quickly hit the close button and thought everything was fine. Fast forward to yesterday, it was mid 30's and I was warm in the vehicle so I opened the sunroof to vent. All is good. Closed it later and since then I have had a rattle coming from the sunroof. It's almost like its not closed all the way. Using my hand I can press up on the back edge and it moves 1/4"+ up and down. So this is where the rattle is coming from. I opened the sunroof up all the way today when I got on the highway today and when I hit 55mph the wind fairing which usually elevates a bit more did nothing.

What do you guys think? Is this going to cost me an arm and a leg if I take it to Toyota?

The first issue sounds like the motor doesn't know where to stop to leave the sun roof closed. I had an issue like this. Look from the top and see if it looks like the sun roof isn't flush with the rest of the roof. If not, you will need to teach it where to stop again.

Couple ways to do that. Either bump the open or closed to the right resting position so the sun roof is closed and sealed and then pull the battery and reconnect. Hold the OPEN button down to open. Hold the CLOSE button to close the sun roof. If it stops, check it stops in the right spot from the outside. Don't anticipate the glass stopping because...

If the sun roof keeps going from full open to full vent when resetting, GOOD! You are now performing a hard reset. Hold down the OPEN button and the sun roof should then go to full open. Pressing CLOSE once for the second time should close it and seal properly.

No idea how to get the car to go into the "hard reset mode" other than the usual disconnected battery. You might have to leave it disconnected longer.



As for the wind fairing not moving, no idea. See if this other reset helps first.

I really appreciate the response! I went out last night and tried this right away. I set the glass where I thought it should be and attempted it first with just a quick disconnect of the battery and had no luck resetting it. But I tried it again, this time leaving the battery disconnected for 45 minutes, and this time it worked! It went from open to close and right into tilt open. However, it did not fix the problem... Unfortunately the glass still has the same movement to it and does not sit properly. So, I guess I'll need to sell the vehicle!! First it was the driveshaft clunk, then it was a clunk from the front sway bar bushings, then it was a creak/vibration between the dash and front windshield and now I have a sunroof rattle. I can't take it anymore!

Dam sounds like if you get this resolved there will be no more things to keep you from enjoying your truck. I am leary of all sunroofs and have bee thinking I should just leave it closed before somethimg bad goes wrong with it. Sucks because I do enjoy it. As far as the driveshaft clunk, did you find a resolution? I have over greased it which really helped but it still does it from time to time. I am hoping that when I level it out next week it helps. I read somewhere that when somene else did a small lift it went away. I am going with brand new FJ springs and Bilstien shocks all around so fingers are crossed...
 
The fix is an updated Driveshaft really, greasing regularly helps and postpones it for a while but eventually it will get worse (as it happened to me) there is a TSB with a new part number available, but chances are it won't be covered under warranty (you can check, but more than likely not.)

First I heard of the sway bar bushings going bad, but then again my '04 is now a decade old, its amazing how well the rubber bushings have lasted up to now; just 20 years ago they'd be practically dust by now.

I also despise Sunroofs for a variety of reasons to be honest with you, among them the fact they are just money sinks waiting to happen for "benefit" over having a 12"/3ft glass hole in your roof.

So I assume you did replacement driveshaft then? If so what what was the cost? I am having to sink some extra money on mine (2008 Sport Edition 4wd, just bought it 5 months ago with 67,000 miles) but hoping its wll worth it. MyX Reas took a shit already, i have the driveshaft "thump", warped routers and a few other annoying issues. I don't mind throwing some extra dough at it if in the end its all resolved. I love 4runners, especially this one with the V8 so I am hoping in the end I am all happy with it. However I have had some buyers remorse thus far so trying to stay positive and get everything all fixed up..:)
