Another VSC Trac, VSC OFF, ABS, BRAKE!, and Swerve/Slippage Light PROBLEM!!!

ABS VSC TRAC Problem

I've read several posts about this issue but haven't decided what to do to fix it. My 07 SR5 is showing the warnings in the attached photo. I recently bought new tires, and the shop tech confirmed that I needed new rear ABS sensors ($200-300). I've seen sensors online for anywhere from $50 to $150 a piece. I'm trying to decide whether to buy the parts and attempt to do it myself, or just bring it to a professional. What is the difficulty level for this repair? Could I do it in my driveway with a small jack? Does anyone have a suggestion for an online parts supplier?

I'm leaning towards paying a professional, if only for the safety of having a warranty should something else get broken during the repair, but I'm not convinced my tire shop would be qualified to do it. Is this something I should be concerned about, or is it a pretty standard task? Can anyone recommend a reputable mechanic in the New Orleans area with experience doing this type of repair?

First of all mechanics lie. I'd pull the codes and see what's causing the lights to come on and then go from there. Look up the codes on this site to study up on the fix.

Yep. Pulled the codes: c1223 & c 1249. I saw on this same thread that it may be the brake light switch. Will try to replace today

Yep, that was it. No more Christmas tree on the dash. On to the next issue: disconnect TPMS light.

Simple fix

After looking at several quick test including using the paperclip to read the codes I had 11 and 54. I finally found the problem, it was 1 broken ground wire to the ABS relay box on the RH inner fender wall in plain sight. I spliced in a new wire and all the lights went away with no further action. So try not to get to frustrated and just inspect everything you can see. I was surprised at the random break but happy it fixed it. This was on a 2002 4runner limited.

I'm having this same issue I had the code ran the first time and it came up with a p420 or something. The shop immediately said you need a new catalytic converter. I went to another shop thinking the first one was trying to pull a fast one. Without even looking at the car they also said a new catalytic converter. Discouraged I went home to start saving money. The lights then turned off automatically a month later and I passed my emissions and inspection and had no check engine etc lights for over 6 months after without doing any repairs to it. Now it's back. Ugh! I'm questioning my local shops as I feel they couldn't see past the dollar signs floating in front of their eyes but I'm at a loss as to what to do/check. The car drives just fine, but the traction off will be a problem when the winter snows start. So really hoping to figure this out. I am not machanically inclined but if I could tell a shop what to replace they perhaps won't put blinders on.

It's a bit dated and I need to update information in that thread one of these days, but it gives a rough explanation on what's going on with the P0420 and why most shops default to "you need a catalytic converter."

In my experience with Toyota, it's a fairly accurate assumption/result when you get a P0420 and/or P0430 that it's the catalytic converter. The Oxygen Sensors can sometimes be the culprit, but that's not as common these days on OBDII vehicles as it was in the older days.

Realistically from your description it sounds like you have a catalytic converter that is "borderline" which means that when it "passes" the on-board test it does so by a small margin (which is why it failed before and then went good for a while and failed again). There is the slim possibility that it could be an oxygen sensor, but that's more of a "we can try it if you want since it's cheaper than new catalytic converters, but there's no guarantee it will fix it."

Realistically there's very little testing methods you can do to check the actual function of the catalytic converter as everything is inferred from what the ECM determines based on the Oxygen Sensors. But the sensors have a very narrow operating range so if they were bad or borderline other DTCs typically pop up in conjunction or instead of a P0420/P0430 (Oxygen Sensor too lean/voltage issues/out of range/ect.) Additionally it also comes down to "do you want to pay more than an hour of diagnosis?" IF I had a 5-channel gas analyzer, heavy duty digital oscilloscope, 4-wheel dyno, access to the factory information on all the sensor data (not always in the FSM), and about 4~8hrs to test every single component at a level most shops would never think of doing I could tell you with 100% certainty if the Catalytic Converter was the only possible failure point. BUT you as a customer aren't gonna foot the bill for all that extra equipment (because equipment like that doesn't come cheap or gets used often so investment vs. return is very poor) and the 4~8hrs of diagnosis. Most customers are trained to think that everything can be fixed in an hour and when it can't it's the company/technician's fault, but sometimes diagnosing something takes more than the flat "1hr diagnostic fee."

Plus most of the information we get from the vehicle means nothing to the customer, I could have reams of data, FSM troubleshooting charts, personal notes, ect. and a customer still wouldn't believe me when I tell them the repair is gonna be $2000 because for some reason people (most who weren't even alive then) still expect repairs and parts to cost like they did in the 1940's. But if they get an oil change done and they lose .5mpg afterwards on their next fill-up I broke the car on purpose. It's a lose lose industry for everyone these days.

Post Note-

Not trying to sound like I am blaming you or you guys in general. Rather trying to show what it's like from my experience as a technician.

Blackworks is right on in his post. Sometimes "shotgunning" the problem and replacing parts based on prior experience is the cheapest way to get the problem solved. Not cheapest in parts cost, but in overall cost when you factor in labor.

I'm an engineer. When one of my prototypes fails I may spend 2 days figuring out what's wrong and troubleshooting down to root cause, because that's how you make designs better. But out on the production line, the techs will look at the same failure, swap in the part that's fixed this problem 892 times before, and move on. Even if they're wrong occasionally, it's still cheaper on a production basis for the company to throw parts at a problem rather than pay the tech time to figure out exactly what went wrong.

Customers, on the other hand, want 100% correct diagnoses and repairs that involve replacing one and only one part, all done in an hour or so. Tough to do on today's complex car systems. As long as parts are readily available and labor costs are high (both true at a dealer), parts replacement is often the best way to save the customer money.

sorry to hijack the thread but I have a weird issue. The CEL, VSC Trac, VSC Off lights do not come on. at all. even when the key is in the On position where the lights just flash, those specific ones stay off. would it be a fuse issue or a bulb issue?

My 2006 4Runner experienced the VSC Trac, VSC OFF, ABS light issue. I went to Advance Auto Parts, they read my codes determining the switch was the issue. When they read the codes with their machine it reset the lights, but the issue continued the next day.I bought the Stoplight Switch for $22.99 from Advance Auto Parts after the issue continued. I installed the switch in less than 5 minutes and BOOM - we are now back in business! Great advice saving me $$$$.:bravo::bravo::bravo:

Same problem on my '06 Limited. Same successful fix. Thanks so much for the great information!

I too am getting the VSC Trac, VSC off, ABS lights on with a beeping sound (I also feel a slight tick from the brake pedal when it happens). Only comes on in the morning. It comes on shortly after starting the 03 4runner, beeps w/ the lights and all for maybe 15 seconds (sometimes less). Then the lights turn off by themselves, sound stops. Doesn't repeat till the next morning. There are not check engine lights or codes to be read-OBDII reader. I've replaced the gas cap (new OEM). Ideas? Sounds like other problems that have been fixed is when the lights come on and stay on. My problem is intermittent. Thanks.

vsc OFF, ABS, SLIPPAGE, ABS, VSC TRAC - THESE FOUT LIGHTS ON

Hello All,
these 4 light on the dashboard will turn on only turning the car on and ONLY AFER PRESING THE BREAK PEDAL and they will STAY ON until I turn the car OFF.
I had this problem for more than 2 years, no break problems, driving was normal. I took it for service to Toyota dealer, they have me 5 hours waiting for an oil change and diagnostics, then they told me that I have to bring it and do a deeper diagnostic. I did not do it!

The after many moths I toke it for service again just for oil change, Then they told me That I have to replace the all LED BRAKE LIGTH ASSEMBLIES (LIGHT FLIKERS) WHEN I PRESS THE BREAK PEDAL COST $1.050

So I thought why I have to change all tree assemblies, I don't think all of them are going bad at the same time, It has to be some other electric problem, so I look on the wonderful YOUTUBE "HOW TO REPLACE BREAK SWITH!!!! Then I realize that was easier than put my shoes on and It was not expensive it range from dealer price from $47 to a regular stores $21 so I got the $21 dollars one to test,

Incredibly The Break lights don flick any more but the more shocking the 4 light in my dash board will neve turn on again after pushing the break pedal for the firs time.

So please research and share so guys like you and I don't have to pay Thousands for a simple thing like that.

easier than putting my shoes on = $$$$ in savings

I hope this history get share and more people can save money for real car problem.

This was really disappointment from were dealer that I spend a lot a money for many years.

This is forum so awesome , reading these kinds of posts make my day.

Another solution to the VSC Trac, VSC OFF, ABS, BRAKE, and Swerve/Slippage Light problem:

I had the problem with the yellow lights coming on for 2 weeks before I found this solution. I used my OBD2 reader + the software app TORQUE - OBD CHECK. I read out the 'fault codes'. Got a code saying "too lean fuel". Next step: the TORQUE app has an option "clear fault codes from ECU". Did it. And the lights switched off all by themselves. Did not even have to stop or re-start the engine. Just kept on driving and the lights were off. Clean and easy solution, since there is no real technical fault but an electronic glitch.

Whatever caused the “too lean fuel” situation will likely cause the lights to come back on very shortly. You most likely have some sort of vacuum leak either a gasket, or tube, and until that’s resolved, clearing the ECU codes is only a temporary solution to make lights on the dash go away, but doesn’t fix anything. I had a fault code for a lean condition on my 2000 Explorer V8, and when I cleared the CEL, it would stay off for a week, or more, but would always come back. Fortunately I was able to clear it, and complete the drive cycles to get the monitors back on to pass inspection before the code came back, but it sucks playing those games.

Brake light switch fixed it for me.

Ive recently started having a light issue and I'm thinking its the brake light switch.

At random intervals (usually when applying brakes) the ABS, TRAC lights will come on and the VSC OFF light will flash.

No CEL (no limp mode)
Cruise control works
Braking is normal

Got one on the way to see if it goes away.

Tried the fuel cap first, no effect. Ordered a Toyota stop lamp switch (84340-69025) off of Amazon, and the lights went away and haven't came back on.
