Don't know the part #s anymore but basically you need to get the non-power antenna mast from a base model 4Runner. This will come with a silver antenna and the actually mounting piece that you mount on the inside of your fender. Then you just order the black whip antenna from the tacoma and screw that into the 4Runner antenna thingy. You can get to all the stuff by removing the clips in the fender lining and pulling it back. The hardest part (which still isnt hard) is routing the new antenna wire. We pulled off the passenger airbag cover and could get to it through there.

Taco Antenna swap-recent review

Hey folks.
Just got register on the site but have been using it for the past 2 years fixing up my Runner. I did the power mast replacement 2 years ago when i bought it and it lasted about the whole 2 yrs until it decided to spit out the mast one morning while starting it up at the grocery. I finally decided to do the non-power swap.
I got prices from 2 Dealerships here in Denver. Stevinson East quoted about $165 for the 2 parts needed(not in stock). Arapahoe Autonation quoted me about $150ish over the phone. I then went on the net and found both parts for about $75-85 w/o shipping. I went back to Arapahoe parts and the man did try to match and ended up pretty close. Final cost: $86.47
Parts:#86309-0C020 Antenna Pole assembly(32" mast with wire wrapped and covered in black. Flexible but not like a real WHIP mast.
Dealer List Price: $55.03 my price: $30.00

Part: #86300-35090 Antenna Assembly(non-powered)incl:decorative cover collar and locking ring nut.
Dealer List Price: $99.58 my Price: $51.00

I thinks I did all right. still pricey. Could have searched the yards.

*Parts man explained that the unit USED to come with the mast included but not anymore. I noticed that the box the Unit came in was big enough for the mast too but they each had own bag/box and parts labels......

So I went home and took apart my console and glove box and got to it., I did have some issues in getting back to the cable routed behind the airbag, etc. I attached twine to the ant plug and tried to pull the cord out through the fender hole. I got about have way and it got stuck and then cut. I was able to pull the remainder out back from the console. I routed the new cable from outside the fender back through the glove box area behind the heat duck. I was able to just plug the new antenna into the Y splitter I had installed when I had upgraded the stereo HU. The Ant. untied bolted right to the power units mount. I pulled the wires from the power motor from the clip itself and left the connector still mounted to the fender. I hope this is a safe way to shut off the power wire. Please LET ME KNOW if I need to do something else.
All seems to work fine now. the antenna looks great. I won't have to worry about the unit icing up and jamming. or draining my new battery.
here are some pics of the 2 parts I got from TOYOTA.

I never cared for the taco antenna mod as I do not want a whip antenna or a stubby. What I did to my gunners:

If replacing the oem radio or if you have an aftermarket radio
Buy the antenna adapters to combine the glass and power antenna cables

- METRA 40-UV43 $6.99 shipped
- Scosche MDAB adapter $4.50 shipped
- Simply buy a new antenna mast assembly as most of the time, your motor is fine. These install in seconds if you know how (just youtube) $19.99 shipped Toyota 4 Runner Power Antenna Mast 1996 2002 Brand New Stainless Steel | eBay

Last, buy a switch for the antenna. This way you can keep your mast down most all the time as the window antenna works great. If you REALLY need it, just flip the switch and raise the pirate flag for better reception

Splice the switch into the antenna wire which I believe is black/red on the 96-99 and black/white on the 00-02 (need to double check that)

This switch is a flawless fit for a knockout to the left of the steering wheel
Scion OEM Style Rocker Switch I do feel it is overpriced but I never searched for a cheaper direct fit. They also have a lighted one as well.

If you have a stock stereo, just buy the switch and new mast and splice the switch into the antenna wire. DONE.

The stubbies work perty good, thats what i have. I got the Tacoma whip antenna from Orileys for about $18 and it came with the piece that i simply screwed the stubbie into. Really easy and cheap...
