I have a 2007 4Runner Sport and am looking to add the VIP intrusion alarm. The owner’s manual said that the 4th generations come with a standard engine immobilizer and an alarm that activates when a door is opened from the inside. So, I followed the instructions, and tested to see if my alarm would sound if the door was opened. To my dismay, it didn't work. I attempted the task several more times but again, it didn't work. Am I missing something? I appreciate any help.

Mine doesn't either. The wife's camry will sound the alarm though. Same system I am sure. I'm interested to see what ideas come up here about this.

It's definitely interesting because my corolla sounded the alarm too. I wonder if it has to be activated?

In order to test it you must lock it with the key fob. Then, when you open the door from inside the alarm will go off.

The engine immobilizer is in the key. It sends out a small signal when the key is near the ignition. You can try this by having a generic door key cut and putting it in the ignition. The engine will crank for up to 30s but not fire.

I have started my car with my generic door key while holding the original key near the ignition. The car can't tell the difference.
 
Subscribing to this thread. I have an '06 SR5, and as far as I can tell, I only have the immobilizer. I was under the impression that the actual alarm was an option (but an option I feel a good many Sport models would have..)

So I believe that I don't have an actual alarm that sounds and neither does the Op. We must just have the immobilizer for the engine or whatever. I should test that immobilizer with the Valet key sometime and see if it's functioning properly.

But one of the comments above made me curious. Something about activating the alarm? If there's even a 1% chance this could be the case, I'm subscribing to this thread, but I still think we just have "keyless" and an engine immobilizer (no alarm).

IIRC Limiteds came standard with the VIP System installed, the plug in wiring is all there and is very simple to install, minus one detail that can confuse you.
 
Definitely no alarm for my sport edition, I tried everything. As far as activating it, I read information on the Tundra forum that says some of the Tundra's require the dealer to activate the alarm. As far as I know that is not the case for the 4Runner. I am going to the dealer tomorrow to pick up some parts. A family friend is the GM of service there so I will ask him. If not, I guess I will have to dish out the money for the VIP alarm.

According to Toyota service, the Limiteds come with the standard alarm and you have the ability to add a glass break sensor. The rest of the models come with plugs for the VIP Intrusion alarm to be added.

If you are fortunate to have the system installed and want to add the glass break sensor this is the part number 08586-3D892. The part cost around $88.00.

If you want the full alarm systems it is available from your dealer or online. The cheapest I found was $175 at trdparts4u. Part number: 08586-3D871
