Anti theft security question

I am new to the car and the forum, and wonder if someone has looked into the anti theft system of the 03' model.

I have a Sport model and it seems to me that the only security system is the engine immobilizer, although not sure how advanced is it really, does it have a rolling code?

I asked my dealer about the VIP system, he said that they don't install the VIP but another Toyota system which is cheaper, however he did not elaborated more, no specs either.

Can somebody point me to the correct direction please.

I understant that the truck is prewired for a security system but not sure for which one.

I want to deal with this asap and your help would be appreciated.

Best Regards

I believe the key has a chip that must be programmed into the starter system. If there is a mismatch between the chip in the key and what the vehicle is programmed to accept, then it simply doesn't start. No need for a rolling code.

This is what I have learned over the years of being a automobile consumer.

If someone wants to steal your vehicle, an alarm will do you no good. If they want it, they'll take it at whatever means.

My 4runner comes with the remote to unlock/lock/open rear window. For me it works. The newer vehicles come w/ a chip in the key so it won't start w/o the key so that's sort of an security mean.

When I used to have an alarm on all my other vehicles, I just used the alarm as a mean to unlock/lock doors anyway. The sound of the alarm doesn't even phase anyone now-a-days so figure you might save a few here and there on other stuff.

If you want to lower your insurance by having an alarm, just tell them that you have a passive alarm (i think the key/chip combo works in this case... or it did w/ my ins company).

If you really want to be secure about your new 4runner, I'd say keep a pitbull or something by it so nobody gets near it! :D but then again even at that, they might just give the poor pup some fresh meat... lol

So the bottom line... alarms are useless... even an steering wheel lock too...

If you really are paranoid about it, I'd say you can go as far as getting a battery disconnect. Simple device that will keep current to your radio (so you don't have to lose any presets) but if someone tries to start up the car, it'll draw too much current and the power will stop. Another thing would be to attach some hood locks so they can't open the hood.

Lastly if they really want your 4runner, they would just pull the vehicle. The good thing is that you have the v8 (which is full time 4x4). This means that they can't just tow it, it's gotta be on a flatbed or they'll damage the transmission/gearbox etc etc. So something that will latch the shifter would be idea so they can't tow it at all..

Hope all this nonsense made some sense. I wouldn't worry too much about security. Most are just annoying and useless anyway.

my 99cents of junk! :)
