Any body else with Anthracite Metallic?

Here's the whole thread on it when I did it. I still have to make the write-up. Only downer on the anthracite is the fact that you can't roll it because it is a metallic. However if you can borrow a decent compressor and you passed the 1st grade you can spray this stuff. Easy as pie.
If you don't want to read all about projects that are STILL waiting to get done page 5 is where I start prepping lol. I installed fenders and 99 coils at the same time as painting.

My new, 17-year old friend.
I've owned 4Runners for over 17 years now. I bought my first one new when the '97s came out - first and only new vehicle I ever purchased. I desperately wanted Anthracite Metallic... but the local dealers could only find SR5 models (best I could afford) in other colors. I had to settle on my second choice - Desert Dune.
It wasn't long before I was hooked on that vehicle, and drove it for a dozen years. When my dad passed I inherited his newer car, and being a family man by then I sold my old truck because the mileage on it was just getting absurd ... it had over 260K when I sold it. The guy who bought it said he was shipping it to Syria, and that they trusted those vehicles to run forever. I bet it still IS running, and I regret selling it to this day.
A year or two later, I missed my 4Runner and bought a 2002 (the 3rd Generation is the best vehicle ever, and to be honest I wouldn't by a later model). I got a nice black SR5 with a low 85K miles on it.. not bad for an 8 year old. It was running strong at 175K this past July when my 18 year old daughter totaled it. Of course I was happy that truck kept her safe - the vehicle is a beast. But I was also bummed - and so was my son, who was going to "inherit" it next month when he starts driving.
So I went on a mission for a few weeks in August, obsessively watching Auto Trader and Cars.com, eBay and such. I was looking for another 3rd generation in good shape. I'm an "enthusiast" - although I don't have the mechanics chops of most of the folks here. I friggin love these trucks.
I was pretty disappointed with my search - all the really good condition vehicles were either too far away, or snapped up immediately (which is amazing - there seems to be people looking hard for these things. Or the trucks were just completely beat up. Still running great (of course) - but beat beyond what a guy like me could repair.
Then one day I went to look at a vehicle at a Chevy dealership in the area, when I was visiting the Chicago area for work. The vehicle was listed on Cars.com for one day, and the ad wasn't complete. It just said a trade-in black '97 4Runner with tinted windows and 135K miles. I figured it was worth a look, with those lower miles. And this is what I found... what I had dreamed about 17 years earlier, and couldn't get. It was luck, that the dealer hadn't advertised an accurate description. I bought it on the spot. I'm keeping it forever. And no, my friends - my daughter is NOT driving it. Or my son. I'd rather let them drive my 528. And I'm not kidding.

How about you? I live in Saline, outside of Ann Arbor. Not many used Toyotas for sale in the Detroit area! One of my best friends is a senior executive at Ford, and gives me grief for driving what I drive. I tell him "make something like this (while showing him this near-perfect condition T4R) and I'll drive a Ford." lol
There really are a lot of good used Gen 3s around Chicago. I bought my black SR5 there too.
I work in Louisiana during the week. I drove this new/old truck down there to use as my vehicle down there for the next 9 months. It handled the 18-hour drive like a boss. There are a lot of T4Rs down there - but not many 17 year old ones.

I almost bought a green one back in the day. There aren't many T4R colors I don't like.
But I've always really liked Anthracite. It is a weird brown/green that is so unique. I actually see a lot of new vehicles on the road these days that have similar color ... which strangely gives it a more current appearance even though it is ancient.
I took this picture after I put the tire foam on out on the road (didn't want it to stain my concrete), because I loved the way the evening sun was reflecting off of it - almost looks green.

Here's my first 3rd gen that I sold back in '07, had some fading on the roof that was rearing its ugly head. Last time I ran a carfax it has been totaled, retitled, and shipped to the UAE.

Alright, so mine isn't completely covered in Anthracite Metallic, but I like the color so much I did paint my Gen 4 rims, the front hood bug deflector, hood scoop insert, and the rear wing over the back window.

What did you use to paint that spoiler? Looks really sharp! I'm looking to repaint my roof and want a rattle can that is close enough.

WOW, sorry I haven't checked in here for quite awhile. I used automotive paint, hardener and thinner and paint gun. I painted everything at one time to make it easier while mixing up the paint.

Indeed. Is that the stock paint job still, or have you worked on it? It looks incredible. I'm in Chicago, still looking for my first T4R. Really hoping to find an anthracite. Thinking I may need to plan to have the paint retouched.
