Hey there folks. I was going to post this in the Calgary/Edmonton regional forum, but the last reply in there was three months ago.
I picked up a 99 4runner at the end of April and have been working on a few maintenance things over the past month or so. I live in Brooks, but the 4runner is at my brother's place in Calgary. So far I've:
- replaced rear axle seal
- replaced e-brake cable
- replaced windshield
- replaced shift solenoids (and changed tranny fluid in the process)
- replaced both cv axles
I figured it was good to go for the insurance inspection, brought it to a shop this morning and they wouldn't pass it. They said it needed:
- new steering rack and pinion (quote "it's pouring fluid. Leaking really bad". If it is, it's not to the point where it's dripping to the ground despite being parked for a couple of weeks at a time. Driving around, there doesn't seem to be any play in the steering or any weird noises)
- rear brake shoes (on the side with the axle leak. I kind of figured that one. It was pretty gunked up)
- front and rear brake flex hoses
- 'rework and adjust park brake cable'
- license plate bulb
They quoted me $2600 which is ludicrous.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a reputable shop that isn't going to try and screw me over? If things need to be done, they need to be done, but if anyone has any thoughts please let me know. I want my truck on the road!!
