I have a 2008 V8 4runner limited...

I notice when I am first starting out and moving from a stop and turning left or right there is almost a slight vibration or shudder felt throughout the entire body of the truck...It is only brief but is there...once I get moving in a straight line it seems to be a thing of the past...

I'm approaching the end of my warranty and want to make sure I don't have some sort of driveline or 4wd problem or something that may be starting...

Appreciate any help or ideas...

^ I guess I should have read your entire post where you said it was turning to the left or right. My bad.
 
What mods do you have? I have the same thing, but it only started after I installed 33" KO's. I don't notice it when turning tho...

No mods at all. Completely stock. Something is going on for sure. I can see it now when I take it in.... "Oh its normal", then right after my warranty runs out I'll eat it...

I suppose I'm good for 5 years on the powertrain. My base 3 year warranty is up at the end of the year...
 
I've got the same issue, it's more noticeable at cold starts. Had the issue when it was stock and still having it now that it's lifted.

Yes, that sounds about right...cold starts more noticeable....Have you had it in for service? Did they say anything?

I have never had the driveshaft serviced yet....kinda wondering if that might help...

So for you it is exactly the same thing? Only when turning, from a stop, and cold?

Surely someone else can chime in on this...gotta be others experiencing it...

What year and motor do you have?

I don't have an explanation but I have an 2004 V8 w/105k miles with the same thing if it makes you feel better. I figure it might be something in one of the differentials since it only happens when turning. Perhaps it is the center diff distributing the power between front and rear wheels in the turn? I just changed the gear oil in the diffs and t-case and it is still there so that wasn't the cause.
I don't really consider it an "issue" right now because it doesn't really bother me. I already feel like I notice noises and vibrations that most of the general public never picks up on. Sounds like most of the guys in this thread are the same way. As long as it doesn't get any worse I wouldn't stress about it too much.
I wish I were more like my wife when it comes to this stuff. I could go in the garage, stick 20oz. of wheel weights to one wheel and I swear she wouldn't notice yet I can feel it in the pedal everytime the ABS pump kicks on.

Mine actually does it too, only started noticing it more recently. Kinds feels like going over rumble strips. It is so minor that I can't decied if it is something wrong with the truck, or just the pavement surface.
 
In general, I too can be a little anal about things but in this case it is more a case of me being concerned that it might be indicative of bigger things to come...

I think so, but I will have to pay more attention. I notice it mostly when turning as I pull out of my parking garage (ie cold starts, but not cold cold, like room temp.). When turning quickly, especially while braking I get tire rubbing, which covers up any other vibrations. Anyway, I will pay more attention and report back within the next few days.

Oh, and btw, and I am pretty sensitive (anal) anbout the slightest noise or vibration or anything that feels "off" about my truck. You are not alone in that regard.

Mine sounds about the same as Will's. I notice it after I back out of my driveway in the morning or parking space at work in the afternoon. I'll start paying more attention to it but I don't notice any vibration when pulling away from stop signs or lights while turning.
 
I've had the same issue since the day I drove the truck off the dealers lot in 2003. Never reported it as a service complaint because it a) seemed pretty minor and b) the dealership made problems worse more often than they repaired them.

The truck has 63K on it currently. For what it's worth, I seem to notice the problem only when making hard right turns from a stop. Never on left turns or when the truck is moving before turning to the right. It's never gotten any more noticeable nor does it appear to manifest itself in poor handling, vibration or any other way I've been able to determine. :shrug:

I so hear yah on leaving things well enough alone if you can...I don't have a lot of faith in some of these "mechanics"...Same experience here...never when moving...only from a cold start kinda thing...

Probably just vibration coming from the Torsen center differential that is normal and nothing to worry about from a mechanical standpoint. The Torsen T3 has proven very reliable. The Torsen shares attributes with both an open and locked differential. A locked center differential is most problematic during acceleration from standstill in a tight turn. These conditions are the most problematic for the Torsen, as well, but instead of a truck that feels like the parking brake is on and the power steering is out and is stressful on parts, all you get is a little harmless vibration that disappears quickly when the speed picks up or the steering angle decreases.

"I had the Front and rear diff fluid changed and the drive shaft re-torqued as recommended at the 15K mile maintanance interval. I don't know if it was the sevicing of the diff's or the retorque that has eliminated this vibration but it is gone."

Yeah, as I recall, the vibration is due to the Torsen but manifests mainly in the rear diff and is felt in the floor of the vehicle, so I'd guess it was the changing of the rear diff fluid that reduced it (it's going to be present, it's just a matter of how noticeable it is) but it also could have been the retorquing of the rear drive shaft, I suppose. If it bothers you, you can pursue a fix, but just remember that it's not a mechanical or wear and tear issue. We could have an electronic system that might eliminate such vibration, but strength, reliability, and longevity would suffer. I'll take the Torsen, instead, all day.
