Any Long Island folk wanna help me do the brake upgrade?

Hey all,
I like to do the Tundra Upgade to my 3rd gen the thing is is that i am not too clear on how to do it.

I know that there are a few folks here that have done it...but what i am asking if there is anyone here on Long island that would like to assist me- OK do it while i watch and learn.

I'll find a parts list and buy the parts. I looked at 2 sets of 17" wheels today and have to make a decision shortly so i also wanted to make sure that the new brake upgrade would not interfere with the new wheels.

I'd rather not get involved with cutting any dust sheilds or anything like that, so that is why i am going with the 17" inch wheels.

Thanks

Send a PM to LINY. I don't know if he has the time or desire, but he has the tools and the skill. Also, if you have a Facebook account you could join the Northeast 4Runner Owners Association and there are lots of people in the Tri-state area that can help.

If you are not going to do anything other than buy parts just go to a shop. That's pretty insulting to ask a random person to do a job for you even if you offer them $30 and a case of beer. I'm always willing to help people on the forum for free but I will not blatantly do the whole job (atleast not for someone I've had no previous contact with). But that's just me, maybe other people are more willing than I.

I've not done the tundra upgrade, but it looks pretty straight forward, just get the parts, trim the dust shield, and bolt the new **** in. Then bleed the brakes.

If I lived closer, I'd give you a hand man! Honestly though, it's pretty straight forward. If you end up recruiting someone to help, have them direct you, but make sure you're the one who handles the tools (unless you're having trouble doing something).

I've had tons of help from friends when working on my stuff, but I try to get in there, and have them just tell me what to do step by step... I learn much better that way! :)

Good luck on the upgrade, I skipped it when I did my brake overhaul, but hear it's worth while! :)

Thanks for all of the replies.

I went to a few shops in the local area asking about this work out of 4 that i went to One shop said it would be over $800,(i could be wrong, but i dont think that the cost is that high, if i find out that it is then so be it). the next shop I mentioned this to said that it cant be done. The last 2 shops i went to said that they would do it but it would not be till the end of the summer because of how busy they are and that they have steady customers.

I did not mean to Insult anyone. The comment "ok do it while i watch and learn" was meant to be read between the lines- i'll know better the next time.

I forgot to mention that i even went to the dealer and asked them - in fact that was the FIRST place that i looked into. I made the mistake of speaking to the service rep and not an actual tech. I dont have an issue with paying to have the work done- no matter who it is.

I rememeber LINY.. I'll see if he is around and if so perhaps we can work something out.
Thanks again.

Go to our Facebook page as I suggested earlier. LINY is there as well as a number of others. We have lift parties and are very willing to help each other out in addition to the wheeling trips we do.

I wanted to finish up this thread before it got too old...

I took the advice of one of the other posters and got busy. I wanted to get this done before the end of the summer. thanks for all of the build threads and part numbers and everything...

This is the result..

Great pickup, the install looks straight forward from my research.

If your going to a garage / shop you should just say " you want to replace the ft calipers, pads, rotors with a complete brake line bleeding and that the tech/mechanic will need to trim a small piece of the dust shield to accommodate the new calipers (bring a pic of the cut out)." Usually when a shop hears "swap, upgrade or custom" they charge more because its perceived as not an OEM repair / maintenance job. Yet this is really a complete ft brake job.

Should be just labor Between $65.00 - $100.00 an hour depending on the shop, I'd guess an hour per side or maybe 2 1/2 hours total if they go for coffee  or bathroom break.

Hey where in long island you at im over in west babylon. I could give you a hand well show you. Even let you use my tools if you need.

Hardest part about doing my 231 upgrade???? Jacking up the front end with the lousy bottle jack having 33's!!

After picking up my 4runner a few weeks ago I tried to do the brakes with the low profile floor jack I used on my Mr2 Spyder, lets just say the stock tires didn't even get off the ground.

Correct sir.... they get $100 per hour just like you said and they estimated just about 2 hours.. what ? are you in the business? you got it right almost word for expensive word... my jet ski tech i think is the same rate..+ - I should have told him that i would bring the beer - although i dont drink the stuff. I spilled my guts to the guy told him what i wanted and that was that. i'm going to wait for the truck while it's being worked on.. and hopefully get a good seat so i can be nosey.

Sonora, the toughest part about doing the 231 mm upgrade is not jacking up the truck it's paying for the parts!

yeah i went for the OEM 231's too... when i walked out the toyo dealer i was $1300 poorer... but like i said the first time i put my hoof on the brake pedal- no wheel shimmy, shake rattle or roll.. i would have forgotten all about it.
and now with new brakes and better rotors i wont have to deal with all that silly warping so often.

I'm port jeff. thanks for the offer to help out it's really nice of you.. the next time i need some help i'll look you up... i'll be out of the country in sept too... heading back over to Japan.. anyone need genuwine japanese parts?

yeah, it might be cool to all hang out the like the import care guys n gals do.. every weekend or so it seems here on the island there is always one lot full of import guys talking their brand of auto... it's really neat...

in the UK it's the same thing, Cept they talk about the scooters they they used to ride back in the day and go on long rides and generally talk shop...

Not in the business just been a shady tree mechanic since I was about 15 years old, so about 22 years now. I've built up 4x4s, Autocrossed a Supercharged Toyota Mr2 Spyder and restored a 1970 Porsche 914 to mention a few projects. Recently I picked up a 2000 SR5 for a tow vehicle / Home Depot hauler. Now I'm on the path to bringing her back to like new driving condition, I did a complete brake job on 4runner two weeks ago and the front pads took me about 45 minutes tops. Toyota makes it really easy to change the pads. Just pull out two pins, and they slide right out. A shop usually charges up to an hour for 20 minutes of work, so an hour per side for calipers & rotors.
I just put a tire one my wifes car Saturday at Mavis and I saw they charge 85.00 an hour or per the book (standard repair time estimate)

It was at the Mavis in Long Beach, I'd bet that is the same rate on Long Island or maybe a few dollars less out by you.
