Any longish term reports on Plasti Dip???

I was looking to re-do the vinyl on my hood but thought I may give Plasti-Dip a go. Anyone have any comments on its durability over a period of time? How it stands up to normal use conditions, washing, sun, bird shat, etc?

The only experience I have with plastidip is that I dipped all of my badges bright orange. They faded to a yellowish green after about three months (originally did 5 coats). I recoated them with ~7 more coats a couple of months ago, and the fading has been minimal since. My truck sits outside all day long in orange county, ca.

Any issues with peeling, washing your truck, etc?

None... But I only did the badges. I'd really like to dip my hood (I really like the look of your wrap), but I can't justify the time/money until I get lights and need it to cut down on the glare (I'm a grad student).

That's a lot of paint and a lot of surface. Just getting it to look right would be a concern unless a body shop does it or you have a professional sprayer. If that's the case (since I wouldn't doubt it that you've got all that stuff) you can buy the plasti-dip in the canister vs. spray can.

Is the vinyl not holding up?

The stuff I have plasti-dipped has held up great though if you get a ding it will start tearing. I did black and it's still black...lol.

I plasti-dipped front and rear emblems about 6 months ago. The back is fine, just a little hard to clean in between the letters, as before. It shows up more on the plasti-dip, however, since the dust in our area really contrasts with the black. The front has not fared as well, however. Lots of little areas of chrome peeking through. Most about the size of the head of a pin. Must be from the constant barrage of rocks and road debris. Initially, I put 5 coats on, thought that would be enough. However, I think the degradation started when I took it through the car wash tunnel. It was against my better judgement, and I haven't been back, but the kids begged me to go through! It may have happened anyway, but the car wash brushes definitely took a toll on the dip.

One of my buddies did a sort of stripe on his hood with it. It's held up well so far but he did mention something about having to get the cutoff right otherwise it'll peel. You get a lot more sun and heat than we do up here though, so I'm not sure how the extra UV is going to affect it. The way I see it is that it's only around $15 for a rattle can so might as well give it a shot. Can't see it taking more than 2-3 cans to cover a hood.

getting it to look even will be your biggest challenge

I've dipped wheels and emblems on several trucks now, but I don't think I'd take on the hood. Too much flat consistent area for me to pull off with a spray can and have it look nice & even.

That being said, the wheels have held up fine (save a nic from the NASCAR crew at discount tire), which was easily touched up.

Oh, I've also done the chrome step rails on my 1st gen tundra, and the kids step on the dipped part some - again, no problems. They do show a bit of shrinking it seems - pulling away from some of the seams, but I just hit it with a touchup and it is fine.

$15 a can? only $5.99 @ Home Depot here in VA!

Plasti-dipped my Trail rims 2 years ago. Still on, hard to tell since its dirty. Only time the Runner gets washed is when it rains or I cross water on the trail.
