Any Service stations owners??

I was wondering if anyone here owns a service station. The reason I ask is that I am trying to understand why there are so few that are set up to run with a generator. Yes, I understand there is some component of expenses.

Additionally, for those that do not have a generator, how hard is it to get wired up, and how long would it take. Furthermore, I am trying to understand why there are no manual pumps or some ability to manual get fuel from the tanks.

Your thoughts?

The reason most service stations don't have generators is cost and space. I'm sure the regulations for running a generator at a gas-station are pretty tough to comply with. The generator would have to be located so many feet from the pump, with it's own structure most likely. The majority of service stations don't have a whole lot of space to do something like that.

i was thinking about, what's their incentive to invest in a genny ? would they be able to charge more for fuel in the event of a crisis...not that I've read, they've been calling it price gouging, i personally would expect to pay an extra $2 bucks or so a gallon in these sort of cases , it might also limit the people who are hording fuel as well, the way i see it is there is no reason to invest in anything like this as there is no return, you can bet as soon as the power gets turned back on you and all of the other gas stations are going to be swamped anyways, so why try to beat the other guy out by spending all of this money, space and time on a genny setup ?

personally, if i was a shop owner and they called price gouging what it actually is instead of free market i would invest in a genny set-up, to me price gouging would be x2 or x3 the normal gas price, but a 50% hike due to demand and shortage isn't anything out of the ordinary in other markets, anyways where the heck do all of the people got to drive to if 1/2 the city is destroyed or underwater? if your fleeing then you only need to buy a little bit of the more expensive gas to get out of disaster area, if your stuck in the disaster area do you really need to be driving all that much right now anyways?

i may have my head up my butt on this one, but this is the way i'm seeing it right now unless any east coasts can tell me how it's going down over there, and how i am wrong on this one. not a fight, i sincerely want to understand this whole thing.

You are right on principle. I don't know where it is but John Stossel did an article on this very thing recently. His opinion is let them gouge because the free market would quickly fix it. Say gas went to $10 a gallon in some disaster area. All the sudden the 1/2 mile long line waiting to get gas because they THOUGHT they needed it would be reduced to a few hundred feet by people who REALLY need it. It would all balance out in the end. If price went up too high that would equal no customers and the other guy a few miles away would drop price to entice customers and poof capitalism works again. Anyway read his article it was good.

hey thanks i'll have a look at this, i've suggested this idea to some of my typical Washingtonian friends and almost got burned at the stake, it's nice to know that i'm not a total jerk and at least one person on the internet agrees with me...whatever that's worth...haha..oh and of course the guy is a fox news guy...sure that adds to my credibility here.

Personally, I believe if people are jacking up the price on anything during a disaster, they should be prosecuted, and their business taken away. Any other time, they can do what they want.

The reason I asked the question is I can't seem to figure out why there are no MOU's for this, and why local, state, and federal agencies haven't found a way to implement some system during the recovery phase to wire a generator for that station. Even if that meant the owner of the service station could keep the wiring and not the generator. In return, the government (any level) could get them up and running, get fuel to the public, as well as provide fuel for the local responders...

For those of who live in rural areas we plan ahead and were taught to do so. I have a generator and at all times during the winter I have enough fuel available for a week's worth of generator power. I also keep our vehicles filled up so in an emergency I can siphon out of them to power the generator. All told I could run the generator for a month if need be. We don't depend on others to do what we can do for ourselves. The first responders, at least down here, can get their fuel from the tanks at their garages be it fire, ambulance or police. The public really does not need it unless they have generators or something. Shelters have generator fuel supplies stocked already. Best thing is to be prepared.

If I NEEDED gas during a disaster I would glad pay a jacked up price with no worries. If I only WANTED gas during a disaster then I would complain.

i think because gas stations are not considered needed infrastructure in the event of a emergency, at least on the city, state or federal level, so no funding for your plan..... remember driving a car is a privilege and not a right..meaning that the government won't and doesn't need to keep you in your car driving for the country to continue to operate during an emergency. most government facilities that are set up for disaster response typically have fuel tanks on site or even have massive portable gennys they can bring and hook up to a gas station on site, for their needs, not yours...

like said above me a certain level of being prepared and self reliance
should be expected from our citizenry, if you've lacked the fore thought to have a bit of fuel stored in case of a power outage or the like you should be expected to pay a significant markup in the times of emergency, we aren't talking about food or water here, we're talking about transportation mostly, as i doubt most inner city people will have genny's to run in their homes to begin with , and those that have had the forethought to buy a genny probably also have the fore thought to have 10 gallons of gas or so on hand.

at one point in my life i would like Americans to pretend there's not always going to be someone there to help you, and have Americans actually plan ahead and take care of themselves as opposed to having crap happen then everyone looking to the government to save them...yes,yes,yes, we need all of the things the government does for us, and they do have a purpose and a place, but i also think Americans shouldn't plan to count on such things in a disaster......if more people tried to look out for themselves it would make what resources we have go that much further and to be blatantly honest maybe we wouldn't have so many pussies who can't do anything in our country anymore...i'm sorry but when a large portion of american males can't even change a tire, we got a problem, i get not everyone can be a macho man, heck i'm not a macho man, that's for sure, but every guy should know how to change a tire or do the most basic of tasks to take care of your self in an emergency....seriously you'd be surprised how often i come across this.....we need to teach kids from an early age how to survive in life increasingly so when alot of kids don't have a father or anyone one around to show them these things, i think girls should know all of this as well, my wife can change her oil, plugs, tire, alternator and most of the common and basic problems with a car...and really that goes to show you the difference of growing up on a farm with old values and growing up in the main stream of society ..alot of my 30 something male friends can't do half the work my wife can on a car or life in general.....

yeah this is a rant at this point,....meh....and please don't take this to mean everybody, i've made broad sweeping generalizations here, i know i'm talking to a group of people who don't actually do alot of the things i'm ranting about, as if your on this board, you are probably somewhat self reliant anyways, things like this just piss me off...sorry for making you all dumber after reading my post.:hatsoff:

I was a station owner for a while, so guess I will bite on this...:D

Let us take a 10 year period of time to look at; that is 3650 days give or take not accounting for leap year. In that amount of time the time that my stations have not had power can be measured in hours, and even at that it is still a small number of hours, so the percentage of time that I have had lost sales is extremely slim. Factor into that the fact that I am making somewhere in the neighborhood of .03/gallon and you will see that the incentive for me to make the rather sizeable investment of buying the generator, having it delivered, installed, and wired into my existing wiring (I am not counting the extra permits, fees, and permissions needed from localities and power companies here). Then on top of that, the attitude of the general public, such as you, is that I should not be allowed to charge a premium for this service or I should be prosecuted and have my business taken away if I do charge extra for the service, even though I have invested extra time, money, and thought into this process really leaves me no incentive at all to implement such measures.

There are so many more factors that we could discuss, such as maint. and upkeep, vandalism, theft, etc. But I tried to keep it basic as to the reasons it is not done.

Don’t take this as a rant, it is not intended as such, more or less of an explanation.:hatsoff:

Well there you go, a perfect business opportunity for you. Get a loan, build a gas station with all the extra amenities and capabilities you feel it should have, and run it as you see fit.

You will find out in short order if your idea of how the business should be run is viable and self-sustaining.
