Any specific years , models, engines etc to stay away from in the 3rd gens?

Coming from a 4th gen, you must be familiar with those SCARY electronic brake boosters and transfer case actuators. Owning an 01-02 with that kind of equipment will keep you up at night and prevent you from doing any real off roading.
In fact, avoid the e-lockers too... the "E" is for electronic, and electronic shit is scary.
I should know, I own a 2001 and it terrifies me.
I say scrap the 3rd gen idea entirely and buy an '84 1st gen with a carbureted 22R and manual everything, that way you'll never have any trouble. After all, the "E" in EFI is for electronic, so that means even the engine controls are SCARY.

yes electronics can be a nightmare with any vehicle,
but I have to say, my swapped in elocker is one of the best investments I have made, and its wired direct , so its working in 2wd, 4wd high, or 4wd low and does not go through the computers, just a toggle on the dash when ever I want to use it.

I agree. The factory e-locker on mine is amazing. Probably one of the best features Toyota could have added

I'll second the divorce option.....
The 01/02 3rd gen auto tranny is supposedly more prone to failure. At least, that is what I've read on here. I also think they have the lowest stock ride height but don't quote me on that.

Sorry to piggyback on this thread. I'm noobie to this forum, and to 4Runners in general. I'm looking to pick one up though, and change that. I thought i'd ask you all since you may be able to steer me in the right direction. I saw an add for a 2001 T4R SR5 Sport. Truck looks super clean, and says it's fully loaded (with the exception of leather seats). Only concern is that it as 215k miles. The guy's asking 4k for it obo. You guys think this is a good deal? I attached a pic below. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

01-02 have a few expensive parts and more electronics than previous years. The consensus in this thread is 99-00 or earlier

That looks like a good deal. All years are very reliable. If you dont care about a manual transmission & transfer case 01-02 are fine, they can possibly cost more to repair do to electronics. You dont have a location listed so my only concern would be rust so check the frame
And read the buyers guide!

It's a good price for rust free SoCal, I would be concerned about the clear coat being faded/peeling from the sun if it wasn't garaged. Black soaks up UV rays.

thanks for the input, guys. Body looks to be in immaculate shape. Almost too perfect actually. One of the pics looks like a stock photo from 2001 lol. Only concern I had was mechanical stuff since the miles are over 200k. But sounds like if everything runs ok, It's a good buy , especially if i can get him down to the mid 3k range.
