Any V8 4runners with URD O2 simulator? p0138 p0158 p0606

Calling all long tube or catless header owners with functioning URD o2 simulator for the 4.7 V8. I have Doug Thorley shorty headers with no cats and was getting p0420/0430 catalyst inefficiency faults so I installed the universal URD o2 simulator (no plug and play for our engine) now I get p0606 ecm error which from research is pretty commonly driven from erratic or unexpected o2 sensor signals. If I install the bypass plug for the simulator no p0606 will log but of course 420/430 come back. Power and ground check out good. I wired the tan reference wire to common "brown" wire from wiring diagram on the o2 sensor pin 4, confirmed by Gadget that they are 0v reference and wired correctly. Do I have a bad sensors? But why only with simulator plugged in?

Further driving today revealed I can get p0138 and p0158 to show up in pending faults, which are bank 1 sensor 2 and bank 2 sensor 2 voltage high. It is possible that I have the gains set too high? They are at 90 gain and 65 filter as recommended in the installation instructions. Any one elses confirmed working adjustments would be greatly appreciated.

I've ordered 2 Denso rear o2 sensors as well.

I plan to monitor sensor output voltage, I didn't see anything in Torque lite app that would show data but assume I can do so in Techstream?

He has O2 simulators that will help get rid of the codes for catless pipes.

I've discussed this with Jason already, he carries the spark plug non-fouler type o2 spacer. This does not simulate a catalyst, it just removes the o2 sensor from most of the flow. I already have some of those and they worked fine with my stock y pipe (3 of them stacked on each side) but when I added the doug thorley y pipe it must have changed the flow to the bungs and started logging p0430 again. I'd like to remove the spacers due to space limitations and reduce the possible number of leak joints in the system, the answer I thought was to trick the sensors electronically with the URD simulator but it's proving to be more of a challenge.

Since I hate open ended threads I'll continue to share my findings as this issue develops.

Yesterday I was able to capture some data using torque lite app to see what the outlet o2 sensors were doing.

Wired like stock (simulator bypass connector installed) we see dithering response on both sensors and pending 0430/0420 faults as expected

Unplugged bypass connector we see open circuit, 0v feedback as expected

URD simulator plugged in we see pegged at 1.2v output and pending 0138/0158 for shorted high. No matter what I adjusted gains and filters to, signal remained shorted high.

Seems like a bad simulator or this universal o2 simulator will not work for our application. I'm in contact with URD to attempt to resolve so hopefully we can get a solution that will work for other v8 catless header owners.

I have a solution for this and all o2 codes that works in 100% of all installations. I can even pass CA smog with no cats installed. No codes ever, computer thinks everything is amazing all the time.

PM me for details.

Gadget informed me that high voltage output can be from using a "bad" non zero reference signal. Although we agreed at O2 sensor pin E1 brown wire was the sensor reference I just measured that it's actually a 12v reference. Moving the tan reference wire to ground for a true 0v reference makes everything work no pending faults from a quick idle test! Will confirm at higher airflows on the way home.

Edit: Trip home from work no faults, cleaned up all the wiring and reassembled dash, trip back to work still no faults! :clap2:

Thanks for posting. Sounds like you got this figured out. Would you mind sharing any pointers for install of the long tubes or the URD universal O2 sim? I read potentially disconnecting the steering column? A stubby box wrench 14mm with flex head as an incredibly helpful tool? Things like that for a DIY would be greatly appreciated.

Also which Denso O2 sensors did you go with? Did you get an EGR block off?

Install for the headers themselves wasn't bad following the DT instructions. It did require unbolting each engine mount once at a time and tilting the engine up to hang the new header in there but it's only one bolt each side.
I did not have to disconnect steering column (with shorties and 1" body lift) but it was close to rubbing I had to change one bolt. 14mm mid length socket and 14mm ratcheting wrench were priceless.

O2 sensor sim I installed up behind the passenger dash right at the ECM so it's not outside in the elements and all wires easy to access. I could share some wiring diagram pages with pin numbers if that would be helpful.

I didn't end up replacing O2 sensors, I have 2 downstream densos in stock now though lol. AIP tubes I installed a blockoff plate in, I have the slyfox bypass.

Boom... Lots if valuable info here. Thank you for this post.

If you could post the wiring diagrams that would be greatly appreciated. I have the screenshot of how you wired the ground as I anticipate I will encounter the same damn problem.

From Gadget after we figured out the hard way, appears he had the correct wiring diagram the whole time just didn't send it with product. Why ask for my make model and engine 10 different times then? Haha oh well, here it is all. Matches fairly similar to what I did except I used Connection A B and C (power ground and reference) to pins in the TPMS connector since I've already cut into it and lessen the modifications to ECM wiring. This should work for 06-09 V8, pin numbers are confirmed different for 03-05 V8. I could dig those up for you as well or you could ask Gadget for 03 diagram.

Thank goodness I found this thread. Especially since it's the famous blackoutt

Doug Thoroughly Short Headers installed, think we bought them from the same group buy a while back actually. I'm running the URD Rear O2 Simulator, 2UZ-FE V8, 2005-2006, Dual Channel (O2 Sim Type E) = $149.00 that was on backorder for a while. Here is a link to the plug and play that works with our 2UZ-FE 4.7 V8

Just recently, like, RIGHT before INSPECTION too :( some codes were thrown - P0172 and P0175. I have the slyfox75 Secondary Air Bypass Installed a couple years ago and the instructions mention to tamper with the wiring that goes into the MAF sensor. Could the included relay he provided go bad? Idk, just thoughts

Are these related? Maybe the URD Simulator took a dump and needs to be replaced; or the relay included in slyfox75

Already replaced the MAF sensor with OEM Toyota a few months back and that fixed the problem at the time.

This is my first reply on this forum and this may be what im looking for. Im wanting to install the DT longtubes here soon and also put in a DT Y pipe but not wanting to see CEL at all. Ive read buy the exstenders and thats seemed appealing because the universal simulator seemed like alot for me because i dont understand wiring diagrams. But now im seeing you popsted a link above to a plug an play setup.
Is the link you posted above plug and play for us even though we dont have 5.7l or a 4.6l v8???? Thanks hoping i can get all this figured out soon.
Also is it recommended that i replace the y pipe and delete those cats when installing the long tubes or can i get away with stock y pipe and 02 exstenders?

That link posted does appear to be plug and play. If you click the vehicles tab our engine identifier (V8 4.7 2UZ-FE) appears to be correct. If you could call URD and confirm that'd be great because I might need to buy another one to pass emissions. Keep us posted!

What are you currently using to trick the 02 sensors? I was told by Blackout when i talked to him earlier that they dont make a plug and play for our vehicle hence why its not listed as a truck thats compatible. Why not use the J style o2 spacers?

IM pretty sure I still have my catalytic converters. Do you ?

I'll be glad to assist to help troubleshoot. I've never heard of a bypass relay failing in the field but everything is possible. It potentially can fail open or closed.(I would think closed would be most probable). If stuck closed, its as if you have no relay/bypass and correct ambient air temp would be sent to ECU. If stuck closed.....it would send a very low ambient air temp to ECU....which maybe could get you a rich code. We can test this with multimeter, or you can unscrew one red connector and hook it back to factory wire(remove bypass from circuit and make like factory) to see if that changes anything. I also happen to have a MAF sensor I can send you to use for testing if you'd like, just PM me. Also Techstream should show your air temp if you have it(that's probably easiest way to ensure its right).

Alright, lets look at this from a logical perspective. IF the slyfox bypass is installed correctly the only thing it will mess with is intake air temperature, therefore the bypass failing will not cause a MAF error and rich bank 1 and bank 2 faults (172, 175) without also causing an IAT fault. I've had my slyfox wiring come loose once after checking air filter, it caused an IAT fault, I fixed the wiring and it was resolved. I agree with slyfox that I don't think it's the bypass relay, they are quite simple and robust systems.

Now onto the simulator part.
You said you have the shorty headers, so do you have catalysts welded to them or straight pipes?
If you have catalysts welded to the shorty headers then no need for simulator unless you're logging p0430 and/or p0420 faults but not likely. Removed the simulator. Still logging faults? If yes then you have other issues such as an exhaust leak before the front O2 sensors, so maybe a gasket leak or bad install job of the headers? Or could also be a vacuum leak elsewhere, these usually flag some other faults as well though too.

If you have empty piping welded between the shorty headers and the y pipes then you need some sort of trickery on the REAR or sensors to prevent p0420 and/or p0430 faults. I was told by URD that the plug n play didn't work for our vehicles but I'm also assuming you have cats and don't need it anyway. It does not appear to be causing the issue because the faults that will log if it goes bad or is out of adjustment are the catalyst inefficiency p0420 and p0430 or REAR O2 sensor stuck high/stuck low, or slow switching. The faults you are logging are related to the FRONT or UPSTREAM O2 sensors. Which brings me back to.....do NOT install any spacers or simulators on the FRONT O2 sensors. This could very well be causing your issue. I know that DT and Jason B have been slinging misinformation about this but trust me those upstream sensors are seeing the correct exhaust stream just as factory without needed to be tricked. Any trickery of the front sensors will cause rich running p0172 p0175, poor fuel economy, and possible engine damage if ran long term. Send us some pics of where your upstream O2 sensors are mounted into your shorty headers and we should be able to resolve this question quickly.

Swear this 0420 code is a yearly occurrence and only happens right before registration.

I'm running the OLD URD Rear O2 Simulator, 2UZ-FE V8, 2005-2006, Dual Channel (O2 Sim Type E) that was on backorder for a while. The same link posted by Drift Monkey - thanks for that by the way. It was installed February 2016 when the headers were put in.

After desperation settled in; reached out to URD asking for guidance. Come to find out, there is a newer "Universal Simulator" they sell. But now I cant find it on their site! Below is correspondence from URD last year on the matter.

Over the years we have found that the 4.7L trucks need to be custom adjusted to keep the lights off on that platform reliably. So, we have moved to using the UNIVERSAL version of our sim for those applications so they can be custom adjusted. We are seeing great luck with that approach.

Also found this as a potential solution. Not sure what a mini cat is or if it could possibly replace the simulator altogether. Tagging duffdog for this
