Not a wildland FF, but I used to work in MD at MCFRS. Best job in the world. +1 for good Wildland stories!

Yep me too. Used to fight the railroad fires here in Southern Appalachia. I was on their call list and for years whenever there was a fire near a railroad and too far out and rugged for others we would get the call. Many times we would go into the woods for days. This was before computers, cell phones, 4 wheelers and all that stuff. Yeah, we were Nitro Circus before Nitro Circus lol.

I deal with MCFRS all the time at work! I work at the C&O Canal and we have river rescues near Great Falls almost daily in the summer time.

I know what you mean, kid... I'm too old for that stuff, too. Now, I'm on a Type 2 Incident Management Team and we get out fires primarily in the east and southeast, although the team did spend four weeks in Texas a few years back. The photo below is from that fire. It's not my photo, but still impressive.
Last year, I only made it to Florida and VA for fires, but spent about two more weeks on "non-fire incidents". My team deployed for Hurricane Sandy clean-up, but I wasn't able to go...

Found a few more pictures of some other events/incidents I supported last year;
The 200 anniversary of the War of 1812 (and the Star Spangeled Banner). Here's the Blue Angels flying over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, MD
Another picture from a fire, but this one was in Florida. Not a lot of action on this fire (compared to TX) but it was still a 35,000 acre fire...
And a picture from the 150 anniversary of the Battle of Antietam.

Nice! you probably deal with ST. 14, 10, 11, and 30 depending on where along the river. The guys on the swift water and USAR teams are knuckleheads, but know their stuff. I'm sure it's a lot of fun!

My son is in his final semester of forestry classes. Has spent the last two summers working with a fuels crew in Blue Ridge Az, spent two weeks with a hot shot crew in NM. Spent a few more weeks in Northern Cali and Nevada last summer. He has some incredible photos and videos. Little jealous of him.....
