Anybody ever take their classic into a dealership for service/work?

I think its funny how they react "once they popped the hood", apparently my dealership doesn't have any 22re gurus. I'm at the dealership now, came in for a basic servicing , rotate balance alignment and also to hopefully address my stalling issue. Well, they cant align it for some reason, they do.t want to change the fuel filter (nobody does) and I'm not sure if they are addressing my mysterious stalling prob (I believe its the voltage regulator).

I just think its funny how they react here dealing with such an old truck. I typically go to the local toy mech, but I got a flyer from the dealership for 10% off. It's amazingly difficult to get this truck running perfectly even with willingness and readiness to pay. I'll check back in once I've got her back.

I had a free state emissions certificate at a dealer. They came back and said they couldn't get the test to run. Quite knowledgeable people.

Well, at least with the 10% off you're only paying about a 20% premium for dumb looks from the dealer as compared to a private shop's rate! LOL! I think I'd ignore the imaginary savings from the dealer and take it to a serious 4x4 shop instead.

you need to go to dealerships that have old timers working there. i work with a few techs that know alot about older trucks. one does a ton of side work on these older monsters

Yes, for alignments, tire balancing, and recalls. Each time, a tech or service person is interested in buying the truck. They can't believe how well it is kept up for a 1990.

I went into the Stealership with my Classic '88 for an old recall ... they had a hard time figuring out why it was still valid.

Anyway, they don't care about any quarter-century-old 4Runners.

But it was funny to me when one of their salesman watched me pull in and as I stepped out I said to him "It's a Classic" .. he smiled and kept looking at it then he replied "It's a nice rig."

I still don't know if he was serious or not.

it only cost me $30, and she's running smooth and definitely riding smoother than in the previous 18 months of my owning her. Also, no serious "4x4"(does it matter?) Shops In daytona beach mate.

Anyways, as said above, the truck is riding smoother than it ever has since I owned it. Put on bj spacers last week and did the FIRST rotation and balancing of the tires. HOWEVER, my stalling issue, which everyone just looves to blame on bad lines..... has not been cured. Apparently, the mech re attached a couple lines that were off (also another thing I think they say to get out of DEALING with these motors) as I left the dealership, at the light across the street she stalled out. No real surprises here today, I'm in fact pleased. The truck got all fluids checked, oil / filter replaced, 40 pt inspection (bla bla), rotation and balancing and some other minor stuff, $30. That. still leaves hair on my balls....

At the local small toyo place or the dealership, i have yet to find motivation is all I'm saying!

Blown Head Gasket Rumor

Hey guys,

I have heard that if your 3.0 has never blown the head gaskets before, the dealer will replace it for free.

I figured it wasnt true.

Any thoughts on the matter?

I am driving a 95 SR5 with 240K miles on it. Bone stock...for now:guitar2:

^ Yup, call the dealer and give them your Vin.. I think there were some other recalls too...steering relay maybe? Its worth the call.

a few years ago i heard toyota stopped the recall but after that we have done one last year and one is currently getting fixed as well. i would say yes. most dealers may think it has stopped so might need to call toyota themselves and ask and if needed report those dealers

I may be the strange one, but I have had excellent encounters with the dealer and my '86. I had mine suddenly shut off driving down the road in the middle of Kansas on a road trip from Florida. Ended up pulling the valve cover to find a destroyed cam drive gear and a frozen distributor. Local dealer had a "22re expert" and did not disappoint. He hooked with up with the parts on the cheap (from his near personal warehouse of yota parts) and walked me through setting timing by sight :wow:

Down here in Jacksonville the local dealer gets me parts when the local shops can't. Sometimes they are even cheaper. Not to mention when my head gasket blew they had one on the shelf.

Damn, too bad Jville is a tad long of a drive.... do you remember the techs name? If my usual guy can't get her right, I WILL go to jville. You're lucky by the sounds of it!
