Anybody here live near Pomona, CA?

I'm applying to Western Univ of Health Sciences for grad school and was wondering if anyone lives in that area or knows what the area is like (safe, ghetto, etc).

The cost of living is high if you didn't know that already. Just like everywhere else their are nice parts and not so nice parts. Something I think you would be able to pick up on rather quick. Pomona is close to a few major freeways so getting to just about anywhere is easy, except that traffic sucks nearly all the time during rush hours where a 30 minute drive can take 90 minutes easy. Trip planning is vital if you want to get away. Traffic in my opinion is the only thing that I can think of that is a real drawback to living out here. Your close to the mountains, not too far from the beach, and a desert adventure is only a couple of hours away. Their are plenty of attractions, Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Magic Mountain, two Major League Baseball teams, one NHL Hockey team, two professional basketball teams just to name a few. Oh yeah, no snow and ice unless you go looking for it, and it hardly ever rains. If your into golf, it's all year long. Plenty of off road trails too.

Someone help me if I left anything out.

I was born and raised in upstate NY, and as much at that is still home I don't think I will ever live back there again.

yeah, he covered pretty much everything...pomona does have its ghettoes though, i know some people who live there, and its bad parts are kinda bad...but in the nice parts, you will be ok...

hes right also, traffic will be bad, but you are in a perfect spot to go anywhere...

do you guys know how the area is around the university campus?

I haven't been down there in a while, but I recall it being a very nice area. Another thing is that you would be close to some pretty nice shopping area's, and I forgot to mention Raging Waters, California's Largest Waterpark , ranked #3 nationally by the Travel Channel in its Top 10 ranking of US Water Parks. Located not far at all from Pomona in San Dimas.

My g/f went to Call Polly Pamona for her Chemical Engineering degree. It's typical of any area in the LA Basin. Therre are good parts and bad. If you're going to school there, you'll be fine.

On another note, Azuza is just a few minutes from there and has a small off road area and some pretty cool trails to play with.

around the schools in pomona, its REALLY nice, and yeah youre next to two or three VERY good shopping areas

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I wasn't sure if it would be safe to have my 4runner if the school was in a bad area so thats why i asked... i went to an urban university (temple in philly) and cars would get broken into, keyed, etc (both which unfortunately happened to me). i have a corolla as a daily driver so i might just ship that instead to save on gas, etc.

although it would be fun to try out some trails out there...

You will miss not having the 4runner out here, but finances are important too.

Don't worry about a campus car problem but more so living in areas of Pomona. Both Diamond Bar and Walnut are a few minutes from campus and a lot nicer areas.
