anyone done a tranny fluid flush/replace through front cooler

did you use Toyota WS ATF tranny fluid?

no I hadn't seen that, thank you

ok then so any thin brake cleaner residue that gets left behind is totally safe to mix with the PS system?

Before I flushed mine I did a bunch of reading and research. I use Mobil 1 products in just about everything I have owned from the past 20 years and before that I used Valvoline products. On this form I read most used Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic some OEM Mother Toyota WS (very costly) and 1 or 2 used Mobil 1.

All were dated 4 to 6 years ago and all posted no ill effects years after from not using Mother Toyota's WS. Mother Toyota doesn't make their fluids somebody else does like every other manufacture. Most things like oil, tires, radios, speakers, alternators, power steering pumps, wiper motors and other things are made by other suppliers.

I wanted to use Mobil 1 ATF for 2 reasons 1 I already had 16 quarts on the shelf and I like their products. But Mobil 1 doesn't have the WS designation. I called Mobil 1 to see if anything had changed hoping they had changed it but it hasn't.

Valvoline Maxlife ATF: Has the WS designation and it is a synthetic that people here have used 10's if not 100's thousand miles now with no ill effects have been listed. And I've been able to average a cost of $4.50 a quart. Best place around here has been Auto Zone when the have the gallons for $17.99.

Valvoline offers 2 Maxlife ATF products. 1 is a stop leak formula says it in big letters on the front of the bottle. I don't know if it is a WS designation or not but I don't personally don't use anything stop leak. They have something in them to swell the seal and I feel if it's leaking fix it don't mechanic in a can it.

I used Valvoline Maxlife ATF. Only 300 miles since but it seems to shift a little smoother than before. But that being said I didn't notice any thing abnormal before but I did pull the pan when I did it just for a look. To be honest now It was a waste of time pulling the pan. I've pulled a lot of pans in my life and this one was one of the cleanest I have ever seen and it had 95,000 miles on it.

Brake Cleaner: Isn't suppose to leave any residue.

I used Amsoil and will be switching to Redline when I replace my PS pump.

Brake cleaner will evaporate before any meaningful amount would mix in.

A little sidebar... Reminds me of an ex who INSISTED that she could ONLY use Harley-branded oil in her motorcycle because they make it themselves special for those engines.

All I had to say was "I don't think Harley-Davidson owns a refinery -- they purchase and rebrand oil from the Citgo company" and that was good for at least three hours of flared nostrils and lecturing about how yes they did, she should know because she worked at the local dealership for a few months...

I agree I'm in the MC business and sell a product that is identical (except for color silver instead of black) to the one HD sells for twice yes twice the price but still have people that won't buy it because it doesn't say HD on it. (Fricken sheep)!!!

It's not hard to figure out when you see the same exact item on different vehicles case in point my Mercury outboard and Fusion and 4Runner all have the same alternator brand on them and have seen them of GM's and Chrysler products. Now they are different part number applications but come from the same supplier.

Now if the tranny on my runner dies what will I do the chances are pretty good it won't but if it does I see mother Toyota for a new one because they got it right. Just like the mid 90's Jeep Cherokee the little one with the Asian transmission. Only seen one of them fail and it had help from the owner. They don't last long with no fluid.

My son has a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport, he recently told me the transmission was going out in it because sometimes it would lug down and he had to give it twice as much throttle to get it to move, so I not knowing too much about these era Jeeps called my transmission guy who has rebuilt a couple of transmissions for me to ask how much it would cost to rebuilt (his quote was$1450) but he then told me he seriously doubted the transmission was bad becasue it has a Toyota transmission in it and to check for other causes for the problem first, I have never driven the Jeep so I told my son to bring it over and leave it for a few days so I could check it out, it took several times of me driving it to get the issue to happen again, turns out it is the front disk brakes locking up, seized calipers, so we are going to be replacing the front brakes with all new calipers, rotors and pads soon to get him back on the road again!

Yeap that is one of the good ones! That series was one of the best Jeeps ever made. Good strong straight 6 engine good trans pretty easy to work on when you had too. IMHO It is the last real Jeep ever built. I knew is was an Asian trans but not Toyota. I still find myself looking for one of those little Cherokees with low miles for a winter slusher instead of the runner but most are getting long in the tooth now. Pretty popular 4wheeler around here and I expect everywhere.

All good things come to and end. Our 4Runners are one of these and I really hope mother Toyota keeps that in mind and don't screw the pooch so to speak like other manufactures. The new Jeeps aren't half the Jeep the little Cherokee is.
