Anyone else dislike the autodimming rear mirror?

This is the 2nd vehicle I've had with the auto dimming rear mirror and I have the same complaint for both: I'd like to be able to manually dim the mirror.

1- Anyone know if that possible? From my googlefu, all I'm seeing is no. The mirror has 2 sensors. Forward facing needs to be seeing darkness and the rearward facing needs to be seeing light for the mirror to dim. The switch on the mirror only turns the dimming feature off...

2-can I just swap in a manually dimming mirror from an SR5? I assume they come with manual mirrors?? Hopefully

My issues are with the auto dimming:
- It's never fast enough dimming, I get lights in my eyes, THEN it dims, then it undims after the lights go away... and the process starts over.
-if I have a larger object in the back or a trailer, the headlights don't hit the sensor quite right and it never dims. :wacko:

Am I the only one with such drama??

Can't you just turn it off? I thought that was the purpose of the power button on it.

How is "lights in your eyes" from the rear view mirror not dimming fast enough any different than HEADLIGHTS COMING TOWARDS YOU AT NIGHT?(!) Through a windshield that is not tinted? You can avert your eyes from the mirror but not the windshield.

Half the time I don't even know if mine is working. I have disliked it from day one. However, over the course of a couple of years I basically learned to live with it. In fact, I had totally forgotten about this issue, until I read this thread. I will now spend the next few weeks thinking about it again. Dammit.

I think your only real option would be to simply replace the rear view with a mechanical one. It wold probably look terrible, but it would get the job done. OR you could tint the back window super dark. The PO on my other vehicle did this and it's so frigging dark that I have no use for a dimming mirror.

I guess I'm a contrarian to your position, but I like it. The only negative I could think of is that sometimes a vehicle can be closer behind you than you immediately realize because you don't get a tip off from the normal glare in the mirror.
 
Funny, I was just thinking how much I liked the dimming rear view mirror. Seems pretty seamless in it's operation to me.
 
I've been wanting to add the auto dimming mirror as I have the mechanical one. Coming from an Acura TL had me spoiled with the auto dimming mirror. Not sure if it is an easy pull with the wires but I would consider a trade if interested.
 
I don't have an auto dimming mirror...? 2014 TE. My 2012 Taco did, and it was useless... but glare from lights has never bothered me. I have never switched a mirror to night setting in my life.

I'd think the parts would be compatible, not sure if you have the wiring already for the auto dimming. Let me do some more digging, the parts diagram mentions something about navigation, but I wouldn't think that would be tied into the mirror.

I travel through Atlanta every few months, maybe we can work something out.

Sounds good. I do have navigation if that ends up helping. No rush, keep me posted.
 
Thread review. We bought a 2016 limited - new in 2016.

I don't think I've ever seen the mirror dim, and it drives me nuts. Those of you that have one, do you hear or see yours dim? If so, ours has never worked. Day/night - it's always the same. The green light does indicate power, but I don't think it ever changes.
 
Auto dimming is great. My last two vehicles did not have it.
What I did before instead of having to manually flip the mirror to dim everytime someone was blinding me from the rear, which is most of the time, is have the mirror angled up so bright lights wouldn't blind me. If I needed to see behind me I could just tilt my head back and see whats behind me. Didn't really care what was behind me.
The dimming mirror now is great, never had a problem with slow dimming and I can see behind me all the time now.

Famous quote form the original gumball rally; "whats behind me is not important"...lol
 
In my 4th gen, I didn’t like the auto dimming mirror. In my opinion, it didn’t dim enough.

I replaced it with an oem manual mirror. At the time, they mounted exactly the same as the auto dimming mirrors, so it was an easy swap.

What is the issue? Last 2 vehicles had it and the 4r works no differently

Other car makers this is a premium option you get from Toyota for nothing

You guys should absolutely trade mirrors.

OP, yes the SR5 has manual mirrors and it should bolt right up.
 
Had auto dimming mirror on a 2007 Mercedes SLK 280 (wife's car). Auto dimming mirror contains a fluid and the seals were a known problem (recall). Once they started leaking, it would look like a lava lamp at night. Recall was crap and you were on your own. I paid to get a replacement, while returning the old one to the OEM producer.

Can't wait to see driverless autos and what can go wrong.
