Anyone else rusting away?

There is a captive nut welded to the back of the rear sway bar mount. Easiest way to deal with the problem (ask me how I know) is to use a sawzall to cut off that captive nut, taking the snapped bolt along with it. Then just use a new bolt/nut to re-install the sway bar.

I picked up a 98 with 190000 on it for $800 knowing it needed rust repair. Frame just got finished today as it was in need of attention. Rockers are completely shot! I ordered new ones from Wolf steel and will be doing that as soon as they arrive.

It all can be fixed... just takes some time.

And, F*** RUST. Honestly, my truck is clean. The frame is mint. Idk how this happened lol. But Of course i have few rust spots.
Found rust in rear driver side quarter panel.





So we cut the rust out



New metal



Epoxy over the tac welds.







Then i removed the big plastic trims in the back to gain access to the rear panels. POR15 and FLUID FILM inside. Then monstaliner from the outside the imperfection.

I had a rust hole in the rocker panel. Patched it up. But im sure in years they will rust away. Not everyone lives in Texas or Arizona! Unfortunately for us who live near ocean, and areas where they lay salt in winter. We must take extra extra time to maintain it. Is it possible? YES! but it sucks to buy a used "CLEAN" truck from someone and once in your hands you notice rust!!!!

This is how bad the rust situation was on the hitch. Had to pull it in order to get it sandblasted and powder coated, and also to access the frame where it was bolted. rust!

Nope, here in Alabama when it snows we shut everything down, throw sand on the road, and pray that the evil white stuff leaves us soon.

I am starting our rust abatement/prevention this spring and every fall is the plan. WA started with the salt a few years ago and the use level is going through the roof. The roads are white this year from so much salt being dumped on them. We used to have perfect under carriage when they used sand...never any rust...now every vehicle has it and it's getting worse.

We do not even have a car wash that washes the undercarriage.....or a car wash for that matter. LOL I will be building a drive over under carriage wash for my place. I hose things off, but I know its not getting the undercarriage very good.

Use an oscillating sprinkler. That's what I used when I used to wheel on the beach. (salt water)

I shut off my spickets off for the winter but he's in the PNW where the winters aren't that cold. You can turn them on on 50* days but my car wash has undercarriage washes. He said his didn't.
I've already had my truck in the car wash 3 times in 2 weeks.

This is totally true. About a month ago they shut down schools, businesses closed, everything for a "chance" of snow. It was like 40% chance and the lows were in the teens. It was a nice sunny day all day... And I live in the very smart part of Alabama, almost 60% of residents in my city have a bachelors degree or higher. Yet we're still scared of frozen water...

I use this after wheeling to get the mud out from under the truck. Set it and move it around every 15 minutes or so.

I just bought a PA runner. It's a 99 Limited with 152k on it. ZERO body rust anywhere and rockers are mint. However there is surface rust on some of the rear underside components, especially the axle. I just fluid filmed the entire underside a couple weeks ago so I'm not worried right now.

Come summer I will be prepping the rust-prone areas to prevent rust from ever happening.

You have to check inside the frame rails. That's where the dirt, salt & moisture get trapped & rot them out from the inside.

HAHAHAHAHA....Scramble I am from the PNW....and I don't fault you for not knowing as we seldom are recognized. I'm laughing understanding and I'm with you man.

Reality....is we have "four" different states in Washington and Oregon. We have the rainy, liberal majority, expensive, large wages, people on top of people west sides. Then we have the dry, conservative majority, less expensive, lower wages, low population east side.

For those of us who grew up on farms/ranches we have these things called frost free valves. For those who didnt we have heat tape! LOL...Frost free is so much easier and they wont freeze if not leaking. If leaking we just plug in the heat tape.

You tell me brother...should we worry about it freezing? Took this pic about a month ago. This is not the norm...but sub zero is very common. We also use snow chains a lot...real chains...not shoe laces and jewelry chains. LOL

So I'm in a bit of a mental dilemma. There are two ways to treat rust: put some oily stuff on it, either used motor oil, rust inhibitor or I guess fluid film. The other approach is to use a rust paint like POR 15 or Rust Trap, which is what I have on order right now.

The problem I see with inside the frame is if I put in the oily stuff, I'll never be able to get it out again completely and therefore won't be able to properly surface prep the rust to take a rust paint in the future if I decide to.

On the other hand, if I just go and apply the rust paint now, then I will never be able to get that off again and if it doesn't stick well I will forever have encapsulated the rust in flaky paint, making future application of oily stuff not very effective because it won't get under the paint flakes.

What to do???? :noidea:
