Anyone else rusting away?

HAHAHAHAHA....Scramble I am from the PNW....and I don't fault you for not knowing as we seldom are recognized. I'm laughing understanding and I'm with you man.

Reality....is we have "four" different states in Washington and Oregon. We have the rainy, liberal majority, expensive, large wages, people on top of people west sides. Then we have the dry, conservative majority, less expensive, lower wages, low population east side.

For those of us who grew up on farms/ranches we have these things called frost free valves. For those who didnt we have heat tape! LOL...Frost free is so much easier and they wont freeze if not leaking. If leaking we just plug in the heat tape.

You tell me brother...should we worry about it freezing? Took this pic about a month ago. This is not the norm...but sub zero is very common. We also use snow chains a lot...real chains...not shoe laces and jewelry chains. LOL

LMAO, I should know that general statements dont work. Different topography brings different weather. I live at 1000ft & get twice the snow my friends get a few miles away at sea level. I have one spicket on each side of the house with those frost free valves. I still dont trust them & turn my outside water off. I have too many valuables in my full size basement to risk a broken pipe & flood. That's where my water heater, gas furnace & well water pump are too.

I just bought a PA runner. It's a 99 Limited with 152k on it. ZERO body rust anywhere and rockers are mint. However there is surface rust on some of the rear underside components, especially the axle. I just fluid filmed the entire underside a couple weeks ago so I'm not worried right now.

Come summer I will be prepping the rust-prone areas to prevent rust from ever happening.

You can inhibit rust; you can't ever fully 'prevent' it. Unless you're God.

Something tells me you arent.

Rust

It is an obsession. Just purchased a 16 SR5 Premium, and live in Western PA. I had it rustproofed/undercoated upon purchase. I'm the kind of guy who would move to better weather in order to prevent rust in a car (if I could!). I purchased a curved spray-head hose extension for watering hanging, potted plants, and use it to rinse my undercarriage at least 3X per week since I go it 3rd week of November 2016. I have been spraying underneath with fluid film, and will soon be checking into a means of shooting in either fluid film or mav-coat inside the frame (any suggestions welcomed!). The salt here is ridiculous - I can wax one day, then even if its dry outside, the salt-dust that gets on the finish from the salt & brine they use on the roads, will eat the wax off the next day. Guess I should have stayed in Florida!

That sounds ridiculous. They use mag chloride here in CO; I guess it's not as bad as salt itself as we aren't considered a 'rust belt' state but I've heard from body guys it should still be washed off vehicle underside and body after driving in snowy weather.

Are you using garden hose at the house? Just wondering because most people don't turn that on in the winter.

BTW there is a fluid film pro-gun with an attachment which sprays in all directions that lets you do inside frame rails.

I brought my truck to work a few months ago and threw it up on the lift and wire brushed and painted the frame. Should hold the rust back a few years.

I picked up a 98 with 190000 on it for $800 knowing it needed rust repair. Frame just got finished today as it was in need of attention. Rockers are completely shot! I ordered new ones from Wolf steel and will be doing that as soon as they arrive.

It all can be fixed... just takes some time.

Got those rockers installed yet? Like to see the finish,. Thanks!

I know in theory, the running boards should help prevent the salt from hitting the rockers, but it also prevents water from cleaning the area where salt does find it's way.

I am sure they didnt help the matter... but this tr4 was not maintained very well in the first place.

I just pick up a 2000 here in ILLinois and was goin over it and noticed nearly every weld on the frame is rusted, elsewhere okay. Just began applying POR-15 the stuff is crazy. Three part process, but in the end i don't think there is anything stronger. Not cheap though. Just watch out as this stuff does not clean easily if you get it on your skin. Simple Green was what i used to remove the grease and such. First time caller, thanks all for your info to the forum, just thought to share my two bits.

It always starts on the welds and sharp edges (or where rocks hit it and chip the paint). Edges like around holes have thin paint which is the first place a crack in the paint begins then starts rusting form there. The welds, I'm not too sure why they rust, presumably because there is residual stuff from welding that prevents a good paint adhesion so it starts flaking off there. Plus welds are rough so you might get sharp edges which then starts the first problem mentioned above.
