anyone ever tow a 1st gen with their 3rd gen?

No, but I towed a 3rd gen with my 3rd gen using a u-haul dolly.

Yes but get a brake controller. They are cheap and you will be glad you got one if you have stop in a hurry.

I've towed my 1st gen Crawler on a 2000# trailer so just over 5000# a couple of times and it was a breeze. Just be warned that if you are running at Highway speeds 70-75 mph in 5th watch your temp gauge as you can begin to get some extra engine temps. If you stay in 4th (recommended for towing anyway) you should have no problem:driving:

Never a 1st gen, but I think the curb weight is around the same as my MKIII

1500 mile tow from Nebraska to California
and those are 890 OME's that had a hell of a rake on the drive out to get it, not so much rake on the way home lol

I have flat towed one through the hills of southeast Oklahoma. While I certainly knew it was back there, I was able to maintain highway speeds on flat ground.
I have both a trans cooler and Tundra brakes. I don't think that trans temps would be an issue with your speed up, but it would be pretty scary on the crappy stock 4Runner brakes.
