One of the reasons 17" wheels are used on 5th Gens is because that is the size required to clear the larger brake calipers they started using. All things being equal, 16" wheels do not allow for it. If that weren't the case you would see a hell of a lot more 5th Gens running around with 16" wheels. You'd have to find a way to retrofit some smaller calipers, or modify the ones you already have. Some guy did it HERE apparently, but ended up shaving some meat off the brake calipers which seems kind of stupid to me.

It's not just 5th gen 4Runner owners, it's all facets of life. For the sake of this discussion let's categorize people into two groups:
1. Leaders
2. Followers
Yes, this is quite a simplistic model but for the sake of argument bear with me:
Example1
A clothing designer designs a new style of shoe that nobody has. He presents it at their annual shoe show and it catches on. Pretty soon everyone is wearing that shoe is all colors.
The leader was the visionary and everyone else just followed.
Example2
Someone bought a 5th gen 4Runner in October 2009. One of the first ones. He lifted it 2", bought black Countersteers and a Gobi rack. He was the leader. Many others followed and still do to this day because they lack the imagination to do something different. Sure, they make little changes but the general vision is still there.
In addition to this is social acceptance. There are a group of people out there who walk to the tune of a different drummer, so to speak. In regards to the 5th gen crowd, these are the guys who mod their vehicles the way they want and, not surprising, these are the guys who get ostracized by all the other 2" lift black countersteer gobi rack guys.
Bottom line, we criticize those who do the same old boring thing over and over (witness the thousand build threads that are all the same) and we criticize those who boldly take a different path because they are TOO different from mainstream.
What's the solution? There is none. Why? Because we are human. It happens in all countries, cultures, races and viewpoints. While we may be different we are all the same. Most people here who log in to read the threads are somehow living vicariously through some of the posters. Who doesn't wish we could be on "that" trip or "that" trail or have "that" mod or have enough money to buy "that" suspension or "that" bumper? The answer? Everybody.

We all do it to some degree. You do have black wheels and a satoshi grill, right? I assume you did it because you thought it looked good. Just like a bunch of other guys.

This is off topic, but growing up I wanted to live free, you know, like Harley-Davidson advertised to be who you wanted to be, independent and not to follow the crowd. I ended up writing a paper in high school about it and I came to realize that if I was independent and followed the Harley-Davidson "life style" I was just another kind of follower. Learned that early on and decided to just do what the hell I wanted to do when I wanted to do it and how I wanted to do it.
Picked up a Harley-Davidson years later and decided to never ride with large groups. I still visited their forums, and even there you will find all the people that want to "live free" following the trend...which style handlebars, which lights to remove or add, where to place the ignition switch to give it that chopper look and which 1 gallon gas tank looked cooler even though it wasn't practical.
I know...I know... I went completely off topic, but it was just to agree with 1E, so blame him.
To the OP, all in all, do it, don't do it, who really cares? You'll be driving it.

I see plenty of modified 5th gens in my area but none with the Gobi rack or fancy wheels. Usually just stock wheels or plast dipped. This forum is another story...

I was just going to say something along these lines. When I owned my Audi and would frequent the Audizine forums, there was a general consensus that RS4 replica wheels looked amazing, and on top of that you could get a decent set of 18's for under $800 at times. Because of the cheap cost and good looks, probably 50% of forum members had a set (including me). Clearly that makes me a follower, but guess what? In my eight years of owning that car, I only saw two other A4's with those wheels on the street, and I got compliments regularly. Some people choose to spend $2,500 each on a forged wheel, which may get them internet points, but your average Joe is not going to know the difference and just say "Cool rimz bro." Same with our trucks. In any given price range there will be a few styles that are more aesthetically pleasing than others, thus we'll see more of them. If money was no object, I'd be more critical, but I assume people have their reasons for buying what they buy. FWIW I don't wheel with any clubs/groups so I don't care about "keeping up with the Jones".

[MENTION=121766]gordi[/MENTION]. When I bought mine last year I spent about a month looking at a lot of different wheel and tire combos before I pulled the trigger on a purchase. Price, appearance, and durability all had a play in my decision. This was a good starting point for me because they had a profile picture of a 5th Gen 4Runner I could "test fit" their wheels on. Give it a try. You can even save the pictures so you can look at them for a little while and see what may stick. I know I had mine narrowed down to about 6 different wheels before I finally decided. Make use of the drop down menus on the left, look for the little "view on vehicle" gray bar to the right of each wheel, and give it a look. You may find something similar to the style you are looking for in there.

Good thread so far. I perceive by the tone of the writing that the leaders are better than the followers. I disagree.
I was going to lift my 2013 TE 4Runner; but, after reading on this site about the compromises I decided to leave it as is. It is very trail worthy in stock form. Yes, I've bashed my thin armor; but, no major problems so far.
I like the look of the rims; so, I kept them. I did swap out the tires for DuraTrac stock sized tires. If that makes me a follower of the leaders; so what.
In 21 months of owning this 4Runner, I've put 46k miles and about 3k miles of off road on it. I hope to hit 1,000,000 miles on it in the next 30 years.
In other words what do you think these threads are for? I use owner forums to learn about what others have done & decide if I want to do it or not. It would be ridiculous for every owner of a 4Runner to test everything they want on their own vehicle when they can see what works or not on here.
So, to the leaders, keep up the good work. To the followers, good for you too. If I read into this thread the tone of setting one of the two above the other and that was not the intention, sorry. If that tone was intended, duh - this is a forum.

Well I might as well put in my 2 cents with regards to this:
I've owned:
- slammed to the ground MK2 Jetta
- 2001 BMW 325XI lowered OEM +
- Right Hand Drive FJ80
- 100 series Land Cruiser
- 2012 GTI.
Now: 2014 Trail Edition.
Every single one of those vehicles you could call a follower and every single one of them looked great and in my opinion and feedback "classy" or "appropriate" with enhanced ability in each proper department that the vehicle was designed for resulting in a gap in my wallet ($5000-$20000) and that's ok. Yes, I have GOBI on order and I just installed kountersteers because its been proven that it works and it looks great for the money....ah money.
Here's my point: Unless you are a master fabricator, got a shop/tools with all bells and whistles and unlimited amount of time and money you will most likely be a follower because guess what...95% of it has been done already by someone else. I don't have that time and commitment because I have to and want to take care of my family, house, friends, myself go on trips (on a plane) etc. etc. 4Runner is just a part of the whole spectrum and i'm not willing to spend all my efforts/finances to "look different" so I can get some kind of personal satisfaction or approval from people out of which 50% are clueless about vehicles period...nevermind a 4Runner lol. It looks great and still different from 90% of unmodded vehicles.

-16's wont fit, my mistake my tacoma can wear them.
