I thought I had seen the numbers by year, but can't remember where I saw them. Just curious about the volume by year. I am guessing the sales of the 4th gen dropped substantially 07 on when the economy went bad. I remember my dealer boasting about having over 100 in stock in 04 and seeing that they only had 10 in stock in 08. That also might explain why I am not seeing many used 08 and 09s.
Anyone have 4 runner sales numbers by year?

I think that some of the drop in 2007 was because the FJ Cruiser came out at that time and stole some 4runner sales. It looks like the 5th gen sales never did reach the 4th gen numbers.
What amazes me is Grand Cherokee sales. Much higher.

That was a pretty big drop from 06 to 08. That explains the limited number of 08s and the 09 numbers were probably even worse assuming the 10 came out early. I am guessing the bigger Highlander that rolled out in 07 probably stole some sales as well. I searched in a 500 mile radius for an 09 and found all of 11 compared to 130 08s (which still isn't many). So much for the thought of getting a newer low milage 4th gen.

The 09 numbers were horrible. Only 19,675! I think it will be nearly impossible to find one of those.

I don't think the FJ stole sales as much as it was the start of economic downturn as sales dropped another 45% the next year and then dropped another 58% to the 19,000 as the 5th gen debuted in December.
5th gens will never match the sales of any year since now they have become more of a niche vehicle and the trends of americans are leaning toward smaller cross-over SUVs vs actual rugged truck type SUVs but 4Runner sales have rebounded nicely and have saved the 4Runner from extinction...... for now.

They couldn't at that point as the 5th gen was well on it's way to production and they knew sales would rebound with a new model as the 4th gens were at the end of the cycle and the 5th gen has been selling quite well considering the competition and market. If the 2010s came out and only sold say 20k units then we might be discussing how the 4Runner will be missed in the Toyota lineup right now.

I would love to see a diesel 5th gen with good torque and high mpg. I wonder if that would help sales?

I doubt a diesel would help much. They ussually add about $7k to the price.

I'd like to see some of the Toyotya Diesel options as well, but I understand why Toyota does not bring them along with other car companies. Setting demand/need for the engines aside, American diesel is subpar compared to the diesel standards of say Europe. We're just now removing Sulfur from the Diesel, which is causing a big issue for older Diesel engines (comparable to how cars had to adjust to lead-free fuel). The poor quality of fuel actually damages these newer diesel engines and is a large part of why manufactuers like VW/Audi, BMW, Mercedes, ect don't bring their highly efficient and powerful diesel engines over to the US Market.

The tough part with having low sales numbers for me is finding decent used parts. I went into a local scrap yard and said 4runner, the guy looked at me sideways. The closest 4th gen he could get parts from was in Ohio (450miles from me).
This is one of the reasons why (when I was in the market) I could have got a fully loaded 03 Jeep GC w/120k for $5k-$6k while my 03 Limited w/120k with a smaller (but better :reddance

Is there a breakdown of production by model somewhere? sr5, le, trail?
I recall reading that Trail production was approx 2%, but would like to see actual numbers.
If the 2% is correct it seems the Trail is pretty rare, with only about 1,000 annual production in years '10, '11, '12, '13 before the 2014 become super ugly.
