anyone have experiance with range rovers?

And this is just an article by LR folks in the know (not like JohnsD90 who has absolutely no experience) on what i wrote above: Range Rover, Defender 24 spline upgrade

Interesting quotes:

"The 24 spline heavy duty axles can also be used in place of stock 24 spline axles (as in Defender 90s) as the Ashcroft units are stronger overall and better suited to use and abuse with lockers of all types."

"A good step to make your Rover more capable off road is to install differential lockers of some sort."

"Trust us, you will... we've broken dozens and we don't even drive with a lead foot, we mainly just do slow speed rock crawling."

"No axle is "unbreakable" but if you drive with common sense and have the best equipment going, you have a good shot at getting through the trails when your buddies Rover is side lined with a snapped half shaft!"

"...the 24 spline unit is much thicker and has a lot more contact area with the differential. This is just part of what makes the axle stronger and better able to suit life in a Rover with lockers."

"Previously in one season of off roading with a 1987 Range Rover with the standard 10 spline axles the ECR staff broken upwards of 7 axles. When the same vehicle was converted to HD 24 spline axles we stopped breaking axles completely."

"The front axle of a coil sprung Rover incorporates a CV (constant velocity) joint. The 10 spline axle CV joints also suffer from premature detonation. Too much stress from a front end locker, or even just too much throttle and too many miles can blow your CV joint splines or cage and leave you stranded."

was wondering about info on range rovers. if anyone has ever owned one and what they thought of it and was it a reliable truck? also land rover LR3 as well. my mom likes them but she doesnt know much about them and i know that teh infamous discovery made by land rover is always broken from what i have heard
thanks!

What is your mom's price range?? I would look at Lexus GX or Acura MDX. Does your mom want to off-road?? There are many other choices if she does not off-road. IMHO, Subaru also makes wonderful all-weather vehicles.

I would stay away from LR period. Hopefully, Tata can improve their quality over the next 5-10 years. BMW and Ford tried to no avail. Now, Tata is best known for making the world's cheapest car in India...so, this is apparently their first foray into luxury SUVs and cars (Jaguar). Now, you will say that Jaguar is getting a pretty good rep, but the current Jag lineup is all Ford...Tata has had no input in the current lineup.

I hope Tata continues to have no input in LR, (or Jag). I drove a Tata Telcoline some years ago and it was one of the worst vehicles I have ever been in. I will sum up my Tata experience with my favorite incident. The sun visor actually fell off into my lap at one point.

well she doesnt want to off road but needs to for the mountains.... if we do in fact sell her es330 we can probably sell it for 17k considering the low miles and condition.... BOught for 20K at 30k miles and now has only like 45k miles. anyways the GX is too expensive from waht my dad said and she doesnt really like the acura mdx.... awesome info though... thanks!!!
