Anyone know of the best antivirus to use?

Okay guys, just wanted to let you know I've decided to keep my Avast, but now I'm using the 5.0 Pro version. Thanks for then help guys!


Okay this one is for the other PC guru's out there. I know there are a bunch to choose from, I've reinstalled windows on my PC and I usually used Avast 4.8, but now with 5.0 I can't find a key. So I'm asking what is the BEST antivirus program to use now?

Sorry I'm not up to par on what's the best. Also I didn't know where else to ask this.

Avast 5 has a free version - should be able to get a key from their website - if I recall you have to provide an email address and they email you the key.

IMHO - keeping your computer up to date on patches is just as important (if not more so) than running anti-virus - but you really should do both.

Well I think after reading a few reviews on the net, I'm going to stick with Avast. I will also download the microsoft one and if it has realtime scanning disable it and just use it as a backup.

Norton is definitely the best as far as security. I've tried Microsoft's Security Essentials because it is well rated and it's free, but it misses the fake anti-virus viruses going around. Norton used to have a reputation for being bloated and a resource hog, but they've improved that considerably in the last 2-3 years. I use Trend Micro at work, and it leaves a lot to be desired; Norton catches things Trend doesn't, and I'd say Trend has become the bigger resource hog in the last year. I haven't tried McAfee lately.

You don't need Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security unless you want those extra features. Plain old Norton Anti-Virus is fine for anti-virus and anti-spyware.

I could get Norton from Comcast for free. Maybe I will use that as well. Not as my active one, but as an additional scanner.

I prefer Norton..been in IT since 1994 and I have used McAfee, Trend Micro, and Norton...the only difference is I use Norton Corporate edition. I would not load all of the other crap just the Anti-virus and spyware option.

I ran avast until it told me my computer had no trojan but my back-up image of it did. WTF?

So, I'm using AVG, and still living clean. I also use CCleaner (CrapCleaner) just to, you know, keep crap off my system.

You didn't mention which operating system and level.

I was very happy with ESET NOD32 on Windows XP -- it's light, highly rated, and reasonably priced. But since switching to Win 7 x64, it has been a load of problems with blue screens. I've seen other people have the same problem so it's not just my system. Not sure if it has the same problems with x32.

Since moving to x64 I've tried Microsoft Security Essentials and it seems to be reasonably good.

I'm in IT, my current company and past company both use Symantec Endpoint Protection. SEP seems ok, but I still some of our systems getting infected.

For malware and spyware, nothing beats Malware Bytes. It works better than the paid versions of Spy Sweeper.

Macs aren't immune to viruses, especially if you run Windows either in VM or dual boot. Macs don't get viruses because a hacker or someone trying to do something malicious, why bother with the small user base. Go for the one with the biggest market share.

YA ! Download software from the company that all the virus writers are writing the virus' for LOL .

ESET is very good and wont bog down your stuff to badly .

Norton crap is THE WORST for sucking the life out of your CPU resources .

You should also run Malware Bytes .

NOD32 by Eset. Great protection and, as mentioned above, a small memory footprint that won't bog down your machine. It comes in at the top of any "anti-virus shootout" test I've ever seen for the last six years running. I run it on all my machines.

Getting ready to dump MS Essentials on a XP Pro lappy. Windows Security Cntr will say it is out of date and Firewall is turned off. NO, this machine is not on 24/7, so updates may be a day late. Avira is fine on my other XP machines, even after a few days behind in updates.
