Anyone move/relocate their trailer wire plug(too short)?

So took the travel trailer camping for the first time a couple months ago with the new car. I noticed that the 4runner hitch receiver sticks out quite a ways back and the trailer wire plug is tucked way under the car. This probably adds a foot of distance compared to my old truck. I loosened up my trailer wire as much as I could and pulled a bit of slack and got it to plug in, but the first right turn I made I heard a pop and my brake controller lights up like a Christmas tree flashing that the trailer is not connected. I got back under the trailer and cut all the zip ties all the way back to the breakers and pulled/stretched as much cable as I could, but its still not as much slack as I would like. SO wondering if anyone has relocated their trailer wire plug closer to the hitch receiver? I didn't see a spot/way that seemed obvious but was hoping maybe someone else has or made a bracket etc.?

Wouldn't it be easier/safer to purchase a high quality waterproof extension to your trailer wiring than hack up the OEM plug? I personally like the location and can't think of anything better for the 4Runner.

I had to add an extension in order to pull my jet ski. When I initially picked it up the guy at the dealership said he had never seen the plug tucked that far back on any vehicle. The extension works fine.

It's much easier to either cut off your trailer's harness and add a longer one, or install an extension, than it is to modify the vehicle's 7/4 pin.

I also just added an extension. There when I need it and tucked away nicely when I don't.

Well, I suppose its easier to add an extension. But I don't think its safer to double the number of ways that could come unplugged while driving. Kind of like using extension cords with tools outside, when I have 2 or 3 hooked together, one is bound to come undone. I suppose I could add something like this below, then just have to figure out where to screw it into. I was hoping the factory one had slack and could just be moved closer to where it needs to be.

If you're worried about then have a trailer shop just redo the cable to be longer. It's really not hard.But don't modify the factory harness on the vehicle.

Hmm, that may be the way to go. I'm not sure how long the factory wire is on the trailer. Maybe I could just buy one that is a couple feet longer than stock. It looks like its about the same cost as the extension cord, lol. I was thinking that would be much more expensive for some reason. Thanks!

I use something very similar to this. Works perfectly fine.

Ditto. 1000's of miles on mine. Never had a failure or and accidental "unplugging"

It's like $7-$10 bucks at Harbor Freight or Walmart. For that price you buy 2, carry the spare and forget about it.

Did you ever find that extension for the trailer lights? I'm looking for a multi pin (7 &4) extension that is permanent and mounts on the bumper.

Hitch plug

This is all you need. I just installed it so it's right at the bumper, so much easier to reach. When you unwrap the tape, there is extra wire length looped and taped up inside. Kit comes with 2 self tapping bolts easy to install with impact driver. There is a youtube video on it too.

Do you have pics of the install? Your link goes to the bracket so did you have to jumper off the factory plug?
