Anyone of thinking of installing a Harrop E Locker in the front ???

When/If I re-gear I will have one installed - looked into it heavily back in 2015 and still have the install .pdf from Harrop. It required minor modification to the diff housing IIRC it was a bit of grinding, things may have changed since and it was nothing that bothered me just an FYI. At the time it was just under $1000 to ship to the US but I don't thing ECGS was selling them back then.

I have not been extremely active on the forum the past 12m but I do not recall anyone having installed one in a 5th gen yet.

Valley hybrid in california has done a number of them in land cruisers. They spoke highly of them. I'm not aware of anyone with a 5th gen running one. It would be my first choice.

It really sucks that Eaton won't just make one for us. The Harrop is a modified version of one of Eatons that they take an Eaton for IIRC either D44 or a 10bolt and then machine all the parts to make it work in a Toyota housing. Eaton e-lockers would probably put ARB out of business if they made them for the Toyota diffs. (joking). But if they were $750, who would go with anything else?

$750 is cheap and yes I agreed with you ... I would do it because its just a drop in a bucket then. Especially since doing gears and thats $1300 just in parts then another $1000 bucks in labor... But another $1300 is going to be hard on top of the $2300 for gears installed...

I plan to add front and rear when I regear, holding off on that till my 33's run down though. From research and talking with shops they're a good unit. Nothing against ARB, but I'd like to avoid air lines into the diff if at all possible.

As others mentioned, if I ever regear, I'd put something in the front. I'd probably go with an Eaton tru-trac though instead. No wiring or switches, with the A-Trac I'd think it'd be fine if it lifted a front tire.

Aren't Harrops identical to Eatons, their only difference is that they are available for different vehicles in different regions, Harrop/Eaton won't compete with eachother's divisions so you will never see Eaton lockers for our Toyotas when Harrop already makes them, has licensed them.

Tru-tracs fit our front?

Anyone have experience with Harrops with other Toyotas? Are they pretty bulletproof units? If I do a re-gear I will for sure add a front locker and if the Harrops are reliable in our 5th gens I might as well get rid of my ARB rear and do a complete Harrop/Nitro Gear setup.

Harrop is Strine. Won't see their other stuff up here as I recall. The mod an Eaton e-locker. You may want to inquire about those instead.

I was told that Harrop takes the parts from another model and machines the new parts to fit Toyota differentials - that's why they're twice as expensive. Because they have to buy an Eaton locker and then make a bunch of new parts too.

man if I pull this trigger ... its $5G's at a blink of an eye

$1314 for 4.88 gears
$1314 for Harrop
$1100 install
$1350 for 35" tires
___________
$5078 ouch !!!

I looked into one of these lockers and one of the big disadvantage that I did not like is it disengages in reverse. Really weird , I don’t know why they do that but it only works going forward.

Tru-tracs fit our front?

I swear i read somewhere about them making one for our 8" front diff, but i can't find any evidence of it. Maybe i was dreaming

Where did you get that info? Makes no sense.

Well that's the eternal quandary but does it really add up to THAT much? Remember, you install the gears at the same time as the locker - and last I checked Zuk doesn't charge anything like that to install a locker. And if you're smart you do the big tires when yours are warn out and you need tires anyhow. So net it IS expensive but not quite that bad.

Yes , like I said makes no sense. call the company like I did if you don’t believe me.

Yes , like I said makes no sense. call the company and ask why , they had a bunch of stupid reasons that made no sense to me.

Too much stress on the housing

1) The front housing is a lot weaker than the rear.
2) The way gears are cut the lower stress direction is forward to reduce wear and stress. In reverse the gears want to push apart with twice as much force due to the cut of the teeth and you can break teeth on the pinion as it gets pushed away. You should take it easy in reverse when in 4wd in general. This why "reverse cut" differentials are a thing. The direction the pinion is driving the ring changes the cut of the teeth in order to have the most strength and durability in the forward drive direction.

It disengages between either direction during the change in rotation. It's just the nature of how it works. It relies on cam "ramps" to depress pins that operate the lock mechanism. I don't know how many rotations it actually takes to re-engage, but it's probably not many. It would certainly work in reverse.
