Anyone of thinking of installing a Harrop E Locker in the front ???

It disengages between either direction during the change in rotation. It's just the nature of how it works. It relies on cam "ramps" to depress pins that operate the lock mechanism. I don't know how many rotations it actually takes to re-engage, but it's probably not many. It would certainly work in reverse.

Yes , All that’s true but this is NOT the locker were talking about. Like I said call the manufacturer and they’re going to tell you it disengages in reverse and does not work.

Hey guys I called East Coast gear supply this isn’t just an eaten e locker or any other normal locker it was specially designed for this application and it disengages in reverse. Comparing it to some other axles or other lockers is of no use

I think there may be a misunderstanding because on both ECGS page and Harrop's page they both say it's an Eaton based locker. And the video that is on Harrop's page for this specific locker refers to people saying "that it doesn't work in reverse" as a "not true" rumour. I'm inclined to call BS on that it doesn't work in reverse... Interestingly enough Harrop has two different lockers for the T8 Case and it may be worthwhile to ask if they are sending the right one for your gears.

I’m a serious buyer I called to purchase this with my credit card in my hand I got to talking to them and once I found out the details I backed out of the purchase . But Ok , I give up you guys are right . Spend your money and report back. I was just trying help. Big mistake as usual. You guys are all going without facts , I talked to the manufacturer and reported what they told me and you guys all disagree. Ok party on , I don’t care.

People just like things that are different for some reason.. I'm with you. When it comes to lockers.. I want something proven and no questions about what and how it does it. ARB is an easy choice for me. . I'm skeptical of anything that is not proven with major beat downs. ARB has chops.. they don't stick with their design for any reason besides it being really good and instant.

If you are considering a locker. Watch this. It should start where he covers all the different selectable lockers and the pros and cons of each. The harrop is not specifically covered, but I'm guessing it is some form the eaton where he shows exactly how that works. they may just have it not engage in reverse in hopes of holding the diff together better since the ring is weaker in reverse both front and rear on our trucks.... i would prefer to make that choice myself. But that entire idea of it spinning before lock just seems disastrous to me. You get in a sketchy situation and you are going to end up putting some major shock loads on it as you make forward and reverse transitions (which is very common in tech terrain)

Edit.
It does look like they now offer a much better high performance E-locker design with an ARB style actuation and gear design but electric... but it says it is only available for Dana 60/70. So not sure what the harrop is but I'm guessing the older pin ramp design.

when I called to order I was expecting it to be basically just an E locker modified to fit Toyota.but it’s not the harrop locker is it’s own design it’s a unique design it is unlike any other locker it’s a modified version of the E locker so it is not comparable to anything else. It does not work in reverse it disengages completely in reverse and only works going forward. I could not believe it when they told me that , so much so that I asked the question several different ways because I couldn’t believe it. So I did not order it.
I welcome and encourage all doubters to contact them and get the facts for yourself as I did.

I think the confusion is that they mention EATON.. which is probably because they used Eaton to design it. Because eaton does that for OEMs..., but eaton also sells direct under eaton performance/Detroit. Plus, most of their lockers (Harrop) do work in reverse according to this.

Based on that video , i’m hopeful I just got bad information from east coast gear so just sent off a email to Harrop lockers in Australia so we’ll see what they say directly and will post the results here as soon as they get back to me. If it works in both directions will be ordering one promptly. The quality looks incredible and operates electronically like my rear which is why I wanted to order one in the first place.
Thanks for the info wf09

If I had to guess I would say it is the old eaton e-locker design that often has to ramp/cam in and out when going to reverse/forward...so it often does not stay locked in reverse and then it catches. This probably got explained as does not lock in reverse (again I'm guessing here). Eaton has since updated their e-locker that they sell for the big heavy axles d60/d70... So perhaps shops that sell both describe the Harrop as the one that does not stay locked in reverse. It may work fine in both directions in practice (as there is some natural binding...), but I do know the older eaton designs were not recommended in hard core off-road applications.

Here is a good quote I found from someone who has experience with them.

I run E-lockers front and rear. They are the original pin design (vs the collar design used on Dana axles) in a 14bsf and a 10b. I have never had a single problem with them, but you have to understand how they function in order to not use them incorrectly. With ARB's, once there is enough air pressure and teh splines line up, they lock and stay locked until the air pressure is released. Eaton's design uses a magnetic drag clutch to operate a ball ramp assembly, which forces the pins/collar into engagement with the side gear. The thing is, it takes approx. 120 degrees of carrier rotation to lock the pins/collar. If you try to thrash on it before it is locked you risk damaging the pins or collar. Likewise, trying to engage it during a wheelspin situation is bad. Also, any time you reverse the carriers rotation (either going from forward to reverse or vice versa) while locked, the locker will unlock and then relock, with the whole cycle taking approx. 240 degrees of carrier rotation. Once again, wheelspin or hammering on it before it is completely relocked can break shit.

I have vehicles with both ARB and Detroit auto lockers... the Deroit has some slop (not near as much as the e-locker would though).. it is not horrible, but not near as smooth and predictable as the ARB though. If I got to start over I would stick with ARBs all the way around. Or go with the new collar design e-lockers if those were around for Toyota diffs.

Don't get e-locker as discussed here confused with the Toyota e-lockers. Totally different design. The toyota has no slop.

While we're on the topic of non-ARB lockers, since there are so few options for 5th gen 4Runner's, does anyone want to chime in on the TJM Pro Locker? I believe they only have an application for the rear, but from what I've read it's similar to the ARB but uses a different actuating mechanism that avoids routing air into the diff, supposedly you don't have to pull the third to maintain it.

My experience with lockers is as a user, not as a builder or maintainer, so forgive my ignorance.

It seems like there's a lot of confusing information out there. I can't personally say anything definitive. The photos I've seen look exactly like the Eaton. It would be really odd for anyone to build a locker that only works in one direction. If that's the case and they're also twice as expensive as the Eaton - that would be a really stupid product to even try to sell to anyone. Who would want that?

The regular 8" version looks like this:

The Toyota 9.5" version literally has Eaton machined into the side of it.

Looks like it's 4.88 gears, harrop elocker, and 35's are my next mod list this march. After the 3rd row seat conversion...

I got my response also

“Thank you for your enquiry with us and sorry about the delay in getting back to you, we have just re-opened after the holiday break.

I am happy to say that the information about E-Lockers not working in reverse is un-true.

Once an E-Locker has been activated it is a completely locked differential, this is both in forward driving and reverse.

I have attached an information booklet and an application for your own personal use and product information.

I Hope this helps and if you are in need of any additional information please let me know.”

happy they got back to me I think I might go this route now I don’t like the air compressor deal

Did anyone actually pull the trigger and get an aftermarket e-locker installed in the front of their 5th Gen 4-Runner? If so how do you like it? Have you had any issues with it? If you had to do it again would you put an e-locker up front or go with the ARB air front locker?

Yup pulled the trigger on a Harrop elocker ... No issues and yes I would do it all over again. Only wished I could control the rear like I do on the front. Blue wire mod doesn't work

Nice.. want to know more on this. How was the install? Does it engage quick or do you need to move around until it locks? How long have you been using it?

Install was done by Yotamasters in Corona, CA ...
Engagement is almost instant the times I've used it. I've used it maybe 5 times but the first 2 times was just to test it out. It's really hard to find places where I need it ... The 4runner is very capable especially when you pick the right line.

Just had the Harrop Front and 4.88 Nitro's installed yesterday over at Pro Gear in San Diego, gears are absolutely perfect, pulls hills in 5th gear now on this heavy Pig. Locker engagement is instant, will have more to report when I get some off-road time. Its one of those things I know I wont need that often, but good to have it when I do.

It's a chunk of money to do all at once, but gears are a must as the 3.73's they come with are outmatched by really any increase in tire size. They should of come with 4.10's from factory in my opinion. Anyhow, a chunk of money, but if your considering a front locker you need to do it while your in there doing gears..

Any chance you have info, pics, or description of the wiring/switching used for the front locker?
