Anyone put a car seat in 3rd row?

I've done it a few times when I absolutely needed to. Since there aren't any latches, I use the seat belt to secure the seat and then buckle in my lil ones with the 5 point harness. Anyone else have a better rec?

Once my kids are a bit older and only need booster seats this won't be a concern anymore, but wanted to see what everyone else is doing.

I just haven't done it because the rear seat is right up against the ass-end of the truck. I don't want my kids back there. The back row is reserved for the in-laws

I hear you, I have only done it once or twice as a last minute accommodation, otherwise I always keep them in the middle row.

I never done car seat but my kids like to sit back there in their boosters. They like it back there... no clue why. I would think seat belt buckling should be fine since most child seats are made to be buckled also.

I've done it several times. If your car seat has the overhang rear head latch, you can run it under the headrest and anchor it down to the floor latch that's used for tie downs in addition to the seat belt.

There is a Misconception that LATCH Car Seat installs are safer then Seat Belt Car Seat Installs.

It is typically easier to Properly Install car seat with the LATCH Attachments, however, there is a 65lb weight limit on the LATCH system. (Includes Seat + Child)

It is typically more difficult to Properly Install a car seat using the seatbelt, however since seatbelts are designed to restrain Adults, there is no weight limit, like the LATCH does.

So, a properly installed car seat using the Seat Belt can be as safe, if not safer, then a LATCH Install. Also, keep in mind that 4 of 5 of all car seats are installed improperly!

I would not put a Convertible Car Seat (Or any Car Seat that has a Top Tether) in the 3rd row, as there is no Upper Tether point to attach to. However most Convertables should would fit forward facing, with a Seat Belt Install.

I have a Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant seat installed in my 3rd row, installed rear-facing. As far as Infant Seats go, that is probley the only Infant Seat you could fit back there, as it barley fits. My Grayco Snugride 35 won't fit back there.

I have a 3.5 year old, and Twin 1.5 Year Olds. I have a Convertible Forward Facing seat in the 2nd Row, and a Rear Facing Infant Seat in the 2nd Row, and another in the 3rd row. This works ok for my current situation, however once the twins are old enough to go Forward Facing, or they outgrow the Infant Seats, I will be switching over to the Dino Radian RXT, so I can fit all 3 across the 2nd row, which will be the safest bet.

We have put a car seat back there a few times, not ideal from the standpoint of installing and taking back out. But as pointed out I wasn't worried about using the seatbelt, I Suppose if someone rear ended you it might be more dangerous, maybe. But just as much as a side impact in my mind. Mostly we put short adults back there, ie my wife. Haha

It is a Canvas Back Cargo Liner. It is the only thing I have found that will cover the rear cargo area, and work with the 3rd row. It has a zipper down the middle so you can put up one side at a time. They have other versions for the different cargo areas of the 5th gen:

The liners have Velcro on the back that attaches the the factory fabric backs, and stays on pretty good.

I have the canvasback in black with 3rd row and its awesome. I ride bikes in all kinds of nasty conditions and its great to be able to toss shit back there without concern. Unzip and split 3rd row like Whiplash Willy has pictured or have both up without any need to remove the liner. Fantastic product.

I think you have a 4th Gen as do I and I also have these canvas covers. I got them at AutoAnything and they're very well made. 4th Gens don't have a zipper but you can still split the seats.

The third row has the same overhead airbags as the middle row, and an additional 2 feet of distance from the front (most common impact area) of the vehicle. Statistically the third row would be more safe than the middle.

OP. We have 3 sons (15-6-3) my wife and I and my mother. So we use the third row with car seats all the time, all over this country. The kids ingress and egress through the break in the middle seats.

I've done the boosters back there but not the car seat. I would only consider it if it was rear facing so they were up toward the middle of the truck more.

That's a very cold thing to say... The third row was designed for kids or tiny people. There is nothing on this earth that I love more than my sons. Implying that I do not love them because I put them in a seat designed for them; and that is safer than nearly any other vehicle on the road is infiorerating to me.

the rear seat in the 5th gen are just like jump seat albeit forward facing... look man I dont doubt you or any other parent on here loves their children.... my comment was sort of in jest but at the same time the way I feel. you can take it as such or be pissed off if you'd like.... at the end of the day you are going to do what you want and what I say isnt going to change that..... dont lose sleep over it. I'm sure you are a great parent :bigok:
