Anyone replace tie rod ends yet?

While i had my truck in at my local Toyota dealership for an oil change, i had them check the front suspension components for any play or wear. the tech mentioned that my inner tie rod on my passenger side has some play.. just curious if anyone else has replaced those yet? i haven't heard anything about anyone on here replacing them yet.

I have, had a piece of hd rebar snap mine... it's no sweat, don't even need a jack.

i'm more interested i guess in failures.. but that's crazy, you're lucky it didn't do more damage or come through the floor!

It was a "cleaned" demolition site of a 3 story stone building. The rebar was 2" dia and was a pretty long piece buried in the dirt. I just didn't see it, only going about 10 MPH and it stopped the truck when it hit the LCA. No damage to the LCA but the sharp edge lined up perfectly with my tie rod. Looked like it had been cut with a knife. But yeah if it had been longer or laying slightly flatter it would have been bad. As it was a new tie rod and alignment and I was rolling for about $90 out of pocket.

wow.. stopped you in your tracks.. i was gonna say it in my earlier post but didn't.. but that could of even had you doing a forward flip or atleast cause the rear to go up!

I'd be more worried about something at a shallower angle going into the cab.

Wow! I'm thinking of tossing a spare or two in my wheeling kit. These aren't very beefy... Was looking at making some sleeved rods and taper to the boot etc. idk. I'd love to beef the tie rods up a bit.

I carry 2 but, haven't used one, yet. You'll also need a 22 or 24mm (can't remember) crows foot and breaker bar to loosen the lock nut.

It acted like a spring. Gave a little and then pushed me back. Like I said it was really slow. Definitely felt lucky that all I broke was that tie rod. I'd definitely recommend a spare if you are going out in the boonies.

Probably one of the easier things to replace. I usually carry spares as they are very inexpensive from places like rockauto.com. Also carry some other parts, used to carry an extra drive shaft too and a tool i made out of about 8 feet of wire and looped the ends. One end goes around the inner drive shaft there is a gap the other on a 5 pound sledge. A couple of tugs and it is off the vehicle. Saved me a few hours in repair a couple of times. I will post up some of these things when I write up my build thread.

I'd be more worried about something at a shallower angle going into the cab.

Just one of the many reasons for high quality skids plates. Now even prevents you from going soprano!
